This solved many trading issues, especially in the fishing industry. The Canadian-American Reciprocity Treaty was a trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom, This meant all of British Colonies including, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Upper and Lower Canada Colony. The Reciprocity treaty was signed on June 6th, 1854 by General Lord Elgin from the British North America and US Secretary of State William Marcy, Us Congress Accepted this treaty in August. This Exact trade agreement was in effect from 1854 to 1865. The agreement was that it could be terminated by Britain or United states at any time with a one year notice. This treaty increased trade and helped both sides at the beginning. In 1865 the United States were angry at Britain for Helping the South and found that this treaty was now only benefiting the British. The United States Announced that the Canadian-American Reciprocity Treaty would not be renewed in 1865. Confederation was needed as United States economy started to boom, but Canadian Colonies struggled without the United states. The Colonies were already being pulled closer by trade and being united would only bring them one step closer to solving these economical
