While the First World War was happening, Canadas foreign policy was still entirely controlled by Britain. Due to Britain, completely, when Britain went to war Canada had to go to war. When the Second World War arrived, Canada was independent from Britain and consequently had an individual foreign policy. Hence Canada was able to make decisions whether or not they wanted to go to war. During 1968 Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, had plans to change the Canadian foreign policy to make the nation less dependent on US approval. Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau requested more assistance for all the poor countries in the world. He also tried to inaugurate trade and sporting links with communist states. Canada is known as the nation of Peacekeeping, peacemaking and a mediator. The end of communism and the new world order has had an impact on the Canadian foreign policy in many ways. Once communism ended, Canada was no longer occupied with a society frightened of the Red Scare. Canada could open to nationalities and races all around the world. The citizens of Canada no longer felt threatened by communism. The immigration policy of Canada became extremely accessible and Canada had accepted people from around the world and excepted all. Many people began to fear communism (The Red Scare.) People began to fear communism when the Soviet Union took over Eastern European countries and created communist governments there. Canada joined the US, Britain and many other western countries in a military alliance which is known as NATO, in reaction to Red Scare. The NATO members corresponded that, if conventional weapons were not adequate, they would use nuclear weapons to defend and protect the Western countries, form the danger of invasion by the Soviets. Canada was also involved in numerous international conflicts since 1945. The fright of communism was powerful in force in the West. Communism began dividing nations globally Korea was split in 1945 with the North being communist and the South who were democratic. The North Koreans invaded South Korea in 1950 with the aid of the Soviet Union. North Korea then refused to back out and then the US requested that the UN come to help defend South Korea.
