Reading Response 2 – Can You Hear Me Now?

Beyond this article, I've seen a TED talk, "Connected, but alone," and the speaker Shirley Turkel states that the more rapid development of science and technology, in fact, partly reflects that technology is guiding the direction of change in our lives, even in our own direction. This phenomenon, in some situations, is supposed to make us aware of it, but in many cases we unconsciously indulge in it.
Are you familiar with the scene: family members sit together and stare on their respective computers and mobile phones but not talking from heart; Friends hang out outside desperately refresh their Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Weibo (popular Chinese social media platforms)

The book “Deaf Like Me” by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley intrigued because it was about a hearing family that had a deaf daughter. I was also interested that the book was written in the perspective of the father. The statistic that vast majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents has always made me fascinated with what each hearing parent has done for their deaf child. I knew that this story would most likely have a happy ending considering the title “Deaf Like Me” I made the inference that maybe his daughter would find inclusion from being emerged in the culture of deaf individuals. “Deaf Like Me” followed the story of the parents Tom and Louise Spradley in the early 1960s.…

Another example of a pitfall of technology dependence is depicted by the sci-fi film, Summer Wars. This film, to me, was a representation of a potential future. Humans have consistently been developing new programs to automate tasks and viewing summer wars and seeing the development of computes and artificial intelligence made me realize that, while we may be hundreds of years from a society like OZ,(the completely virtually society in the film, where traffic, emergency services, banking and entrepreneurship takes place- the online society that controls the workings of the real society) we are trending to create such an environment. The film envisions a future where a sole global and omnipresent digital environment oversees entrepreneurship,…

Even those living in the far away depths of America, and those who can’t even afford free school lunch. This is hard to image and poses many questions, but in general, it is unrealistic. “Our Future Selves,” an article written by Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen, informs readers on the importance of technology in revolutionizing our today. Both authors are highly involved with the technical world as Schmidt is the former CEO of Google and Cohen is currently the director of Google Ideas.…

The Negatives of Technological Determinism Describing the relationship between technology and society can be somewhat difficult, with many individual perspectives. Individuals can either have a utopian and positive outlook on technology, whereas some may have a distopian and opposite perspective, and see technology as a deterrent (Quan-Haase, 2010). Additionally, there are many more theories on the relationship of technology and society. That being said, some of those theories prove to be more appropriate than others. One theory that is commonly discussed is technological determinism, which is a very limiting theory when it comes to describing the relations between technologies and society.…

Since the very beginning of the human existence, we have made choices to improve ourselves in order to survive. For every choice we made we had always had to give something up. These improvements in the way we live our lives have always been present, and recently the improvements that show up the most are linked to technology; it is a major concern that technology will change the way we are in the future even more than it is already doing each and every day. Technology will keep changing us like it has always done throughout history, but change does not necessarily mean takeover; technology will advance as an extension of ourselves, to help us improve and make us better humans. When technological improvements are brought up, one thinks robot…
