Candy Waterfall: Can Solids Flow Like Liquids? Introduction Does the shape and size of candy affect how it flows? What do candy, sand, and cereal have in common? They are both granular materials. Engineers need to know exactly how fast materials flow down a funnel so they can get the right amount in each box. Imagine if you had a box of candy and you opened it and it is only halfway full, wouldn’t you be mad? That is why factories and engineers need to work together to find out how fast things flow through a tunnel. If the candy is smaller and round shaped then will it flow better than something that is heavier and big shaped. How can solids flow like liquids?

Cut one circular hole in one part of the cardboard box. Make sure your hole is big enough to make your funnel level.
2. Put your funnel into the hole of the cardboard box.
3. Put the medium sized bowl under the hole of the cardboard box
4. Measure the same amount of candy for each type of candy group (250 grams).
5. Calculate the size of each candy
6. One person puts their hand at the bottom of the funnel while the other person pours one type of candy in.
7. Get your stopwatch ready and start the timer when you remove your hand.
8. Record the time it took for all the material to leave the funnel. Calculate mass flow rate.
9. Repeat 3 times with the same group of candy
10. Repeat steps 6-9 for each type of candy
11. Calculate the average flow rate by adding up all three trials together then divide by three.
