I am reading the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This novel is about two siblings who meet a new friend while dealing with moody neighbors. They are struggling to live a normal life when their father, Atticus decides to defend an African American in court. As all of this is going on Scout’s Aunt Alexandra begins to live with them and, teach Jem and Scout manners. In this journal I will be characterizing Atticus Finch, and Question whether Calpurnia is a better mother than Aunt Alexandra.

First off, Calpurnia is extremely caring. When there was a sick dog, Tim Johnson, Calpurnia risked her life to insure the safety of others. Calpurnia cared about everybody and would not stop till she was positive people on their street were warned then put into a safe area. Another way she was caring is when she brought Scout and Jem to church. Calpurnia enforced the children too soap down twice, and then draw fresh water for every rinse. She also went over the children’s clothing to make sure it was perfect for church, which shows she cares about Scout and Jem’s appearance. Last reason to demonstrate Calpurnia cares is how she does not let Scout and Jem get away with anything. Her not letting the children get away with anything shows she is not just taking the job for the money. Also, it shows that she is incapable of letting the kids get hurt by doing something unintelligent. Aunt Alexandra is not caring because she judges the children, and she never cared about what Scout wanted. Not only is Calpurnia caring she is also hardworking. The first way she is hardworking is in her reading. She is one of the only four African Americans that can read in First Purchase. Calpurnia had to work very hard to learn how to read then even harder to teach her eldest son. In addition to her hard work on reading Calpurnia also works hard for Aunt Alexandra and Atticus. When she is asked to help with anything she works
