Calcium can be considered as one of the most used elements of the periodic table. People tend to use, eat or drink it every day even if they do not know it. The symbol for calcium is very simple: Ca. Its atomic number is 20.(Helmenstine, 2015) Calcium has 20 electrons and 20 protons because electrons and protons will always have the same amount. There are also 20 neutrons in calcium due to the subtracting of the atomic weight and the number of protons to get the number of neutrons.(Nelson, 2015) It has a melting point of 1548 F (842 C) and a boiling point of 2703 F (1484 C). The atomic weight is 40.078.(Live Science Staff, 2013) Calcium has a density of 1.55 grams per cm cubed and is solid at room temperature. It is classed as an Alkaline earth metal.(Nelson, 2015) The orbital notation for calcium is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 or [Ar] 4s2.(Helmenstine, 2015) …show more content…
He named it after the Latin word “calx” which the Romans called lime.(Nelson, 2015) In the first century the Romans processed lime, but it was not discovered as a metal until 1808.(Helmenstine, 2015) It is hardly found in the elemental form, however it is easily found all over the Earth often in the form of rocks and minerals such as limestone also known as calcium carbonate, dolomite called calcium magnesium carbonate, and gypsum which is calcium sulfate. Calcium is recognized as the fifth most common element in the Earth’s crust. It is about the eighth most sufficient element found in the ocean.(Nelson, 2015) This element is the fifth most riches element in the human body.
