Chemical reaction: calcium with air:
2Ca(s) + O2(g) → 2CaO(s)

Chemical reaction: calcium with water:
Ca(s) + 2H2O(g) → Ca(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)

Calcium is a familiar element for most of the people at the moment of looking to a periodic table, including oxygen and hydrogen. Because its frequently related with bones and milk, which are, in fact rich in calcium. However, calcium has other interesting properties and functions (besides those already mentioned), as an alkaline earth metal, as cation, Ca+2, and as an important part of our biological make up. I will try to show in detail these amazing chemical properties about calcium. Calcium (Ca) belongs to the second group of the periodic table with Be, Mg, Sr, Ba and, Ra; which make it, an alkaline earth metal, a pretty reactive element when in contact with air and water. Calcium “ readily forms a white coating of calcium nitride (Ca3N2) in air at room temperature. It reacts with water and the metal burns in air with an orangered flame, forming largely the

Plants require calcium for the health of their leaves; it is principally responsible for holding together the cell walls of plants. Living organisms need it for the proper function of the cell “where the movement of the calcium ion, Ca+2, into and out of the cytoplasm operates as a signal for many cellular processes”. (The Alkaline Earths as Metals, Chapter1, p14) Finally, Calcium is the major element present in all vertebrates, particularly in bones and teeth. In conclusion, calcium is an essential and require element for nature to work

When hydrochloric acid was added to the unknown and known solutions, both resulted in no reaction. This also occurred when potassium hydroxide was added to both of the solutions. Barium chloride was then added to the two solutions, which resulted in a cloudy white precipitate from both of the solutions. A cloudy white precipitate also formed when calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate were added to both the unknown and known solutions. These reactivity tests were conducted in order to establish how the unknown compound would react with acids, bases, and salts.…

Project 3 Identification and Synthesis of an Unknown Ionic Compound Mitchell Morgan CEM-161-007 Josh Ward 28th October 2015 Abstract The chief objective of this experiment was to identify the unknown compound. The following tests were conducted to eventually establish the identity of the compounded: qualitative solubility tests, anion and cation tests, flame test, and the formation of a precipitate. The physical properties of the unknown ionic compound found that it has no smell and was soluble in water.…

Another experiment was a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and red phenol to test if the sodium was the cause for the rise in heat. When the two were mixed together there was no increase in heat which leads to the conclusion that the calcium chloride was the cause of the temperature increase. The last lab was a mixture of water and calcium chloride to see if the red phenol was the sole cause for the change in color. There was no color change when the two substances were…

A clean flame test wire was inserted into 0.2 M NaCl and also placed on the flame reputedly. A bright yellow persistent flame was a positive test of sodium being presented, then repeat the same instructions for the unknown ion. After the flame test wire was clean 0.2M KCl was dipped into the flame resulted a lavender color after several trials as well as the unknown solution. 10 drops of 0.1M Ca(NO3)2 in a test tube and 2-3 drops of 1M Na2C2O4, a white precipitate of calcium was present. The process was repeated for the unknown solution which had the same results.…

I would choose the food associated with label 2 more often. This is because it contains 15% of calcium and label 1 contains 0%. This indicates that this food product is more beneficial for the individual since it provides an important mineral. This allows bone health to be maintained and could reduce the risk of complications in the future (Smolin et al., 2015). Also, looking at the sodium content, it is much lower compared to label 1.…

    Boron Research Paper

The element boron, not to be confused with Borax or boric acid, is an essential trace mineral for human health, helping to strengthen bones, increase absorption of other minerals, and to regulate the sex hormones in both men and women. Intake of boron helps the body absorb and utilize other minerals by interacting with steroid hormones. Boron is important for bone growth and maintenance as it reduces the urinary excretion of magnesium and calcium. The boron vertebrate transporter helps these substances deposit within the bones rather than being excreted as waste. Higher levels of magnesium and calcium help prevent osteogenesis, or brittle bones (that can break easily,) which is especially important in postmenopausal women and older men, as a deficiency in these minerals has a negative effect on bone strength and regeneration.…

Calcium looks like a gray, rock like substance, and hydrochloric acid looks like a clear liquid with no significant odor to it. We put Calcium into a tube and add a squirt of acid. When they are in contact of each other, the product begins to bubble up. We then place another tube over it, in order to fill it with the gas being produced. Then we place a fire underneath the gas filled tube.…

This experiment exemplifies the effects of the concentration of hydrogen on the strength of bone. As bone is majorly composed of calcium, and knowing that acids want to neutralize. Throughout the experiment, results show that the strength of the bone was compromised in acidic situations, but rather unaffected in situations where the concentration of hydrogen was basic. Even more noticeable than the change in pure tensile strength is the change in the maximum deflection before fracture. Throughout the experiment, specific degradations in the bone, were significant phenomenon which typified the corrosiveness of the certain pH the bone was in.…

Conclusion The empirical formula of the copper chloride hydrate compound is CuCl2 · 2H2O. Discussion of Theory The technique of gravimetric analysis can be used to find the empirical formula of a compound when the amount of it is known. By dehydrating the copper chloride hydrate sample and using it for an elemental copper-producing chemical reaction, one can isolate the masses of the water, copper, and chloride and determine their mole ratios. Since the Law of Definite Proportions states that a chemical compound always contains fixed proportions of its constituent elements by mass, the mole ratios can be used to find the empirical formula of the copper chloride hydrate compound.…

As the reactants don’t contain a single reactive element, the reaction cannot be single displacement. Thus, the reaction is a double displacement. Double displacement reaction is a chemical reaction, in which the positive ions of two different chemical compounds exchange and produce two new compounds. In the reaction, Calcium and magnesium element of two compounds exchange, forming the calcium sulfate and magnesium chloride. I noticed that during the reaction, some white powder is produced and starts precipitating at the bottom of the test tube.…

    Unknown Salt Lab Report

During the entire lab, the main purpose was to, Identify the given unknown salt through a variety of experiments which yielded valuable quantitative and qualitative data. Before any experiments were carried out, multiple properties were compiled in order to have a source to compare the found results with. Beginning with the first experiment to determine if the unknown salt was hygroscopic, efflorescent, deliquescent or none of the above properties. This test was done through weighing an amount of the salt and reweighing after 15 minutes which would show if the salt had one of the above properties (either by gaining mass from the air, losing mass to the air, turning to solution) or none of the properties. Furthermore, tests were done to identify…
