CVS entered this industry relatively late, and has plenty of room to grow. MinuteClinic has only 1.5% market share, well below the 21% of the market that CVS’s pharmacy and specialty operations each account for. The company plans to add another 600 such clinics by 2017.
CVS’s specialty department handles the high-end, complex, life-sustaining and prohibitively expensive drugs that operate on low volume but gigantic prices. The drugs that are distributed in in this sector is rare which makes them expensive for the consumer, but lucrative for CVS. The specialty revenues were $21 billion in 2013 in 2015; CVS Health’s pro forma specialty pharmacy dispensing revenues grew by more than 40%, to an estimated $29.6 billion. Each day as I filled prescriptions, I realized that the majority of the ones I filled to my amazement were covered under the free prescription program. I found it very intriguing that in today’s society there aren’t many things that are provided absolutely free especially a billion dollar company. One of the main hindrances of ensuring a patient takes a prescription sometimes is the fact that some may not have the money to cover the cost. By offering free common used prescriptions, it showed me that Publix truly cares about ensuring the patients overall health comes…

CVS Health is in a strong position to capitalize on that growth by providing pharmacy benefit management and walk-in clinics operated by nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Retail clinics are a major part of this investment play as they are a significant growth driver in the industry due to their low cost, convenience and transparency. It is expected that the continued shortage of physicians in the U.S. will benefit retail clinics, which CVS is aggressively expanding; having more than twice the clinics as its closest competitor, Walgreens Boots Alliance. Furthermore, it is a lower risk investment in its sector due to its relatively nonexistent UK exposure, investor aligned management, stable balance sheet and increasing free cash flows. Its closest competitor is plagued with uncertainty brought out by internal and macroeconomic events, it recently lost their CEO due to institutional investors disagreeing with the way the company was being run.…

On behalf of our member companies, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) writes to request a meeting to discuss the importance of fair and accurate reimbursement for community pharmacies for specialty drugs. As we previously noted, addressing both the cost of the drug product and the cost of dispensing is critical to maintaining patient access to Medicaid pharmacy services, especially when considering the increasing cost of providing specialty drugs and services to the Medicaid population. We are requesting this meeting to speak to you to discuss possible options for CMS to provide further direction and/or guidance to the states in this policy area. We believe that if adequate direction and/or guidance is not provided, states will adopt insufficient reimbursement rates and dispensing fees for specialty drugs resulting in below-cost reimbursement for participation pharmacies.…
