Last but not least, another serious problem is the development of brain damage. CTE, one of the more recently found diseases, stems from constant trauma to the head and leads to depression, dementia, and loss of memory. Researchers with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University have recently found CTE to be in 96 percent of NFL players they’ve examined and 79 percent of all football players. In addition, Neurology stated that NFL combat veterans are three to four times more likely to die from neurological diseases, compared to the rest of us. Furthermore, previous NFL linebacker Junior Seau committed suicide after leaving a note that requested for his brain to be studied. After his death, he was diagnosed with CTE in May 2012.

To start off with, some argue that all sports lead to injuries and ask why football must be changed, rather than the other sports. Football is the second uppermost cause of sports injuries, so it must be acted upon more urgently compared to others. Many argue that new rules regarding the safety of the players have already been made. Even this year, there have still been many injuries, deaths, and suicides that continue to occur even with the current rules. For example, just at the start of the 2015 high school football season, six already passed away from football injuries. Additionally, some state that without the violence of football, the audience would not receive the satisfaction that they paid to watch. When at football games, the audience should be there to enjoy the actual performance, and not the barbarity of the sport. Fantasy Football is a game that allows you to manage and coach your own NFL team consisting of players of your personal choice. The game is scored based on the performance of the players and contains no real violence. Though this may lead to some crestfallen fans, Fantasy Football’s popularity indicates that football can still prosper without the violence. So why watch the brutality of football when safer games, such as Fantasy Football can be played instead?
