CLO 1: The biggest problem throughout my community is the rapid influx in prices for medical insulin. This issue directly benefits from statistical analysis because it would allow people dependent on insulin to purchase necessary medicine at a fair price. Prices would be fair because prices of insulin would eventually decline if drug production were to be increased. As of late, the prices of insulin have skyrocketed. This problem has only increased and will continue to get out of control. As long as time goes on, the current situation will only get worse if things do not change. The high deductibles eventually led to harmful changes for the prescription brands that insured insulin dependent patients. This change, forced people with diabetes to either switch insurances, or pay an outrageous amount of money in order to purchase necessary medicine. Additionally, there are only three companies that manufacture insulin in the United States, according to Forbes.com. By only having a small amount of companies making this essential drug is alarming. Insulin is extremely difficult to produce, however, more companies need to make the drug so the companies do not have an excess of power. The production levels need to increase in order for the prices to stop increasing. All of the problems involving the price of insulin are due to production problems with the vital drug. Not only has this influx wreaked havoc in the pharmaceutical world, but it has also forced insulin dependent people, such as my father to pay whatever price that the insurance company sets for their product. The demand for the drug will only increase. This is true because each year, more and more people get diabetes and become insulin dependent. This shift will lead to even larger problems throughout time. Around ten percent of people in the world have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This equates to around twenty-nine million people worldwide. Out of all the people, over eight million people were unnoticed cases. The instability in the drug’s pricing has gotten so extreme that some insurance companies have retaliated back at the controlling drug companies and are not covering certain insulin brands. A prime example of an insurance company denying needed services, is the brand “CVS Caremark”. This particular company no longer insures the insulin brand “Lantus”. This insulin brand is no longer covered by insurance because a Pharmacy Benefit Manager
