The state agent points out that there are three daisy species that grow near the Anasazi archaeological site, the X. Confertifolia, the X. Tortifolia, and the X. Cronquistii. Based on the plants external structure, I can notice the X. cronquistii slightly differs from the X. Tortifolia in leaf margin, however, all three daisies appear similar in color and shape. Therefore, the evidence regarding the plants’ morphology is insignificant. Moreover, the X. confertifolia and the X. toritfolia can be found on a wider geographic scale.…

I am volunteering with No Mas Muertes in the Sonoran Desert on the Tohono O’Odham reservation, leaving water and medicine for migrants making their way through US-Mexican border territory: it is territory which is inhospitable, if less heavily securitized. Characterized by rattlesnakes, extreme temperatures, and a complete lack of drinkable water, it is a geography described by former Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization Service Doris Meissner as a “natural ally” to US Border Patrol, producing tens of thousands of migrant corpses annually. I place three gallon jugs at the designated station and take a photograph. Nearby, there are remnants of old tires, a backpack containing three pairs of socks, a filthy doll which has faded in the sun. There is a pile of empty water bottles which have been slashed open and now lie, useless.…

Throughout the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, Mama’s Plant is clearly used to show the struggle of life in South-Side Chicago and how its residents tend to make the most out of everything they have. South-Side Chicago is notoriously known for being one of the worst areas to live in America as it has high crime, high poverty, high unemployment, low opportunity, lack of funding into the system, as well as a lack of proper schooling. Residents of this specific area are faced with the decision to become another oppressed statistic on the “failure” of the neighborhood, or break the status quo by living life to the fullest and attempting to make the most out of all the things present in the current environment. As the sun set behind it, an ominous silhouette stared back and cast a shadow over a trail leading into darkness. My friend’s eyes widened in wonder as I commanded, “Hike on!”…
