Determining whether a particular policy has been successful in reaching its intended consequences can be tough. In the case of the Shepard Byrd Act, which was signed into law in 2009, is not so easy to analyze due to some of the flaws within the scope of the act, its implementation as well as the hesitance of marginalized people to get involved with law enforcement. Despite these afore mentioned issues, I believe several important issues need examination to judge the effectiveness of this groundbreaking legislation. We should begin by asking whether law enforcement personnel treat LGBT people who are victims of violence with dignity, without bias and are held to that standard on a national level since we are evaluating a federal policy.…

This will be accomplished by determining whether or not the homeless youth is attending school and if they feel safe there; working within the schools to prevent bullying and harassment of the vulnerable youth; connecting school staff to training, consultation services, and youth service professionals to provide training on creating a safe, welcoming, and appropriate school environment for transgender youth. We must commit to contract only with health and mental health providers who are appropriately trained on the specific needs of LGBT* youth and who are open and comfortable with youth of all orientations and identities. Materials about safer sex practices which are affirming to the LGBT* community at large, and which include information that is medically accurate must be available. Assumptions about the sexual orientation of gender non-conforming youth must be avoided; transgender youth must be allowed express their gender identity through their chosen attire, hairstyle, and mannerisms for as long as they require our services. We must respect transgender youth and use their chosen name and pronouns (if they do not volunteer this information, it is acceptable to ask their preferences).…

Throughout history the Canadian education system has been utilized as a means to instil societal values and reproduce cultural norms. Researchers have referred to this phenomenon as the hidden curriculum (Jay, 2003). This hidden curriculum serves to secure the privilege of the dominant culture while subsequently marginalizing minority individuals. Normative discourses of gender and sexuality are promoted to students through the process of socialization. The process of constructing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) individuals as deviating from the heterosexual norm is referred to as heteronormativity.…

One problem that is ever evolving and continuously effects young adolescence in school is bullying. Bullying can be defined as an activity in which someone intentionally participates in either physically or emotionally harming a peer through any medium; such as words, actions, or technology. And with an increase in technology use, minorities in school, and a growing LGBT group in the education system the problem is only going to get worse. There is a common misconception in the adult community as well as media that somehow…
