Conventional wisdom has it that once a person has reached adulthood the chances of being bullied is almost nonexistent. Unfortunately, the chances of being bullied as an adult is just as common in childhood however the behaviors of a bully may not be as obvious as that of a childhood bully. According to The Workplace Bully Institute the reasons for bullying in the workplace 35% of adults experience bullying in the workplace. Reasons for “1. Zero-sum competition. Employees are pitted against each other in positions or tasks that allow only one winner to emerge from deliberate battles, creating many losers. 2. A small percentage of employees see the Opportunities and are willing to harm others, at least willing to try to harm others if they …show more content…
“Individuals under stress at work have been known to experience fatigue and/or low motivation which can directly influence an organization’s morale and decrease overall productivity….Health-care costs, absenteeism, and workplace safety are the issues most adversely affected by workplace stress” (The Workplace Bullying Institute). It is also important to note that negative relationships in the workplace will not only impact the parties involved but, it will also impact the culture of the company Employee productivity may be impacted as a result of the stress of the unhealthy work relationships. It is imperative that employers address employees who display inappropriate behaviors because it will ultimately lead to greater success and overall quality of the workplace. Techniques that can be taken to combat bullying in the workplace include addressing the situation head on by both the victim and the employer. Allowing unhealthy situations to brew in the workplace will only lead to explosions and can be a gateway to an increase in inappropriate behavior. “Executives must emulate a positive, non-threatening work environment for resources to follow; Policies and procedures must be implemented that document the way harassment (legal and illegal) … including workplace bullying…will be addressed; Inappropriate behavior must be resolved as quickly as possible to demonstrate that any unwanted activities will be addressed in a timely manner” senior management need to display a culture of respect by establishing a zero tolerance policy. “Respect, as a cultural variable, should be front and center during any discussion on workforce planning and hiring/retention strategies.” he CEO and senior leadership must define “respect” and articulate the types of behaviors that their organization embraces (as well as those it will not tolerate).
