Death from environmental issues according to the World Health Organization (2009) in Bulgaria manifests themselves in lung cancers, other cancers, neuropsychiatric disorders, cardiovascular disorders, and musculoskeletal diseases. The worst manifestation is in musculoskeletal diseases. Bulgaria has one of the highest percentages in the world in this cause of death. The causes of these environmental issues come from water and air pollution created mostly by industry. In 1972 the environment was becoming a huge issue. Human trafficking not only results in sex trafficking but labor exploitation and organ selling.
Magdalina Valtchanova, a former Miss Bulgaria, founded Face to Face Bulgaria in 2003 when she learned of these atrocities happening to children and young adults. This organization is working to prevent human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Andrew Ridgway interviewed Magdalina and was shocked to learn that 10,000 Bulgarian girls are taken across borders to work in the sex trade per year.
Face to Face is trying to educate young people about the dangers that lurk in the streets from these traffickers. Most young people are unaware of the dangers and just don’t believe it can happen to them. To remedy this issue somewhat, Face to Face produced a short film entitled, “Svetlanan’s Journey.” A true story about a young Bulgarian girl sold into Amserdam prostitution. The filmmakers did not hold back any of the atrocities that this young girl encountered thus it has been quite effective in gaining the attention of young Bulgarians. With their attention in hand, Face to Face is more effective in sharing tips for young boys and girls to better protect themselves and to make them aware of the dangers out there and dangerous situations in which to
