On a dreary night, at the corner of Redstone Boulevard, Andrew trudged home from his friend's house. Walking at night, by the stone paved roads and dimly lighted sidewalk, Andrew felt alone. Something that had become a habit for Andrew since the night his parents died. He still

The silhouette looked like a monster as it advanced, screeching and snorting as it went forward. Looking at the creature appear and disappear through the fog, Andrew remembered the beast. It was the same creature that had killed his parents, screeching and snorting just as loudly as it was now the Bulbous Devil. The memory of his parents flashed before his eyes. He saw the fear in his father’s eyes as he jumped in front of his mother as the monster approached and how his mother had screamed and cried as the monster decapitated his father before charging towards her. The pain flooded back into Andrew’s mind, forcing him to his knees, face covered in tears. Screaming out his uncle’s name at the top of his lungs, Andrew attempted to draw the attention of the monster and off his uncle, but the monster continued forward. The majority of the boys, especially the “littluns”, assume that the beast is an external source of fear. The author uses many physical objects to support the boys’ imaginations, such as creepers, and a dead parachutist. As Ralph, who assures the “littluns” that there is no beast, and Jack investigate the island, they believe they have found the creature as the text states, “Then the wind roared in the forest, there was confusion in the darkness, and the creature lifted its head, holding toward them the ruin of a face. Ralph found himself taking giant strides,” (123). Ralph is filled with child-like paranoia of a beast residing on the island, as he disregards what he preached to the younger boys.…

Shimmering lights lit up the crowded streets of New York City like the stars of the night sky; they made up for the fact that you couldn’t see the real ones. My feet felt like concrete blocks attached to my legs as I walked, I guess you could call it, through numerous groups of locals and tourists, all I’m sure who could tell easily that I had quite an edge. They didn’t know why, and frankly neither did I. All I knew was that I wanted to be by her side. I had first encountered Mabel one random night when I stumbled upon the 42 Club after leaving work, grimy and dirty from fixing up snobby, rich guys' cars all day and hating my life.…

The alleys were eerie in the late November nights, barely lit by a single streetlight that only seemed to light up a single 6ft space. Now, there were no street lights at all, and barely anything to call an alleyway. Buildings were burnt, whole sides taken out, and the buildings gutted, leaving nothing but rusted metal and scrap pieces of paper. Boots pattered along the abandoned sidewalk with stern purpose. From their shoes to their heads they were covered with clothing, keeping the harsh winds from blowing handfuls of dust into their eyes.…

Key to the Cornerstone Gusty winds snaked across the sandy African landscape, bursting drafts of gritty heat upon the cracked ground below. Draughts weaved through the clay houses barren and lifeless with not a soul to be seen. The village had been deserted. Piling in small heaps against the rugged walls of the shacks, the sandstorm collected its silt within crooks and nicks wherever it could find them. Tousled door flaps snapped and wagged in the perturbation.…

Title Maddie saw the shadowy figure plummet into the icy waters of the Ohio River and when it made impact the loud bang of ice breaking echoed across the forest. A moment later she heard the screams as the figure, most likely a man, slipped beneath the ice. Maddie sprinted down the steep banks wondering what help a 15 year old could be to a suicidal, possibly already dead man. She skidded to a stop at the banks of the river, not wanting to risk her life on the unstable ice and called out, “Are you okay!” As expected she got no response and tentatively took a step out on the ice.…
