My siblings and I were told to put our things down and wash our hands to sit down and eat. As we ate at that rectangular table, we all shared how our day had gone. “Ok finish up your dinner and begin doing your homework,” my mom would say. My siblings and I would sit at the table doing our homework. I had to help my sibling with their assignments as I was the oldest. However, when I needed help it became difficult because I would need to translate the assignment I didn’t understand in Spanish so my mom knew what was being asked. She would try to help me with the best she could, however sometimes that wasn’t enough and I would have to leave it incomplete. I worked hard because I knew how much my mom struggled to provide school supplies, our food, and everything we needed. My mother would tell us how important education is in this country and how much power we would have with a good education. As I grew older my mother began to see me as an adult. Being viewed as an adult gave me many responsibilities such as taking care of my siblings and helping more around the house. I realized that I am not always going to depend on my mother, and began thinking of my own future. I knew I had to take education more seriously because it was the only thing that would help me accomplish my goals in life. I began paying more attention in class, going to school every day, taking notes, and complete my school assignments. I started to actually learn and become interested in the topics being taught. Education became important for me and my life, not just a way to make my mother

I remember the day when my mother dropped me off at the front door of my pre-school class- the welcoming teachers who were extra tender, the vibrant wall decorations, and the clueless children who were dominantly from Mexican heritage, but the image that strikes me most is of me hugging my Guatemalan mother’s leg, telling me “Todo ba estar bien mijio. ”(“everything will be fine, son.” “Ba” is informal spanish for “va”) In Thompson's web article “Five Reasons Why People Code Switch”, He elucidates how individuals code-switch in different ways and in many states of mind to assimilate with those around them.…

May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of person-kind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.” Ever since a child, I grew up believing that one story can have an impact in your whole life, overtime a part of my childhood’s happiness came from reading many stories about people who didn't have nothing at first but grew to be one of the most successful people in this world. Stories were my escape, a distraction from what reality looked like, from the poor environment I lived in and that was just the beginning.…

I must have been 5 at that time, but even then I knew that moving from Peru to the “Estados Unidos” was a common dream. I have always had a horrible relationship with fractions, similar to the relationship I have with life. The confusion of balancing the numerator and the denominator was similar to the confusion I have with balancing family and school. Being on many social programs it really made me feel like a charity case, but I didn’t know what I could do to make a difference in my future.…
