Buddhism has been impacted and shaped a variety of cultural and societal trends within the western world, often altering its teaching to appeal to a western audience. Within the book Mindful America: The Mutual Transformation of Buddhist meditation and American culture, Jeff Wilson analyzes how mindfulness has evolved from a Buddhist principle to a widely accepted cultural phenomenon in western culture. Chapter one, entitled “Meditating Mindfulness: How Does Mindfulness Reach America?” deal with how mindfulness transitioned from a traditional practice of ordained Buddhists to a cultural phenomenon, progressing and altering throughout the decades in America. Wilson, drawing upon the texts written by western Buddhist scholars and monks, argues…

A Day in the Life of a Buddhist Monk in Korea, This girl wrote an article how she went a day with the Buddhist at the Beomeosa Temple in Busan, South Korea. When she got there around 1 pm with other foreigners, all of them immediately changed into their monk clothes. Consisted of a vest and baggy sweats designed specially for sitting “Indian style” when they will do meditation time. Had to learn few “temple manners,” like proper way to bow, whom to bow to, where to bow, how many times to bow, etc.…
I had the opportunity observe Ann Hideko Ohkawa’s presentation as part of ADV 101 course. ADV 101 is an advising course strongly recommended for freshman students and required for transfer students. This class meets every other week with a different topic as the subject. For that week CAPS (counseling and psychological services) was invited to teach meditation. Ann, working as an intern at CAPS, was responsible for introducing the students to the class before an instructor started meditation.…
Site Visit The Site that I visited was Dawn Mountain Tibetan Buddhist temple on Sunday the 27th at 11:00 a.m. I choose to go to Dawn Mountain because I like the fact that Buddhism doesn’t really have a god, and it’s more of a Philosophy. Also I like to meditate, it’s very tranquil and relaxing. I didn’t have many expectations going in just because I didn’t really know what was going to happen during the service.…
My Visit to Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha I decided to take a trip to the Albuquerque Vipassana Sangha to study Buddhism for my religion experiential essay. On August 4, 2016 I found myself in a setting in which I never would have thought I would see because I was raised a Christian Baptist who was once taught that her religion was the only true and accurate religion. As the time for the meditation and dharma talk approached, I began feeling nervous and excited to try something new. As I exited the bus I turned down Rosemont Avenue and searched for the temple, I was met by a beautiful and long path.…
Temple Puja is a sacred place or site where an image of Buddha is present and is meant as a place of worship and offering. Because Buddhists do not believe in a deity, worship is seen as a way of offering thanks and asking for guidance to the Buddha, who is an role model for all adherents. Although there are such activities like chanting, reciting prayers, lighting incense, etc. The significant practice enables Buddhists to engage in intense concentration, removing any distractions for complete focus. As apparent by Dogen, ‘[Proper meditation is] single-minded intense sitting, practising repentance…”…
The Facts For my second Aesthetic Encounter I decided to visit The Hindu Temple of Atlanta. Hinduism was a religion and culture I was not familiar with prior to my last couple semesters, but as I started to learn more about the fascinating tales the culture interest me. I quickly learn the difference from Buddhism and how Hinduism helps develop the religion far as morality and handling the everyday stress that comes along with humanity through meditation. When visiting the temples, one is capable of seeing the two tall structures miles away.…
Last year, my family had a shaman ceremony to protect our family. A shaman ceremony is when a shaman goes into the spiritual world to talk to the bad spirits to stop making us sick. We called a shaman to come in to do a ceremony for us. We killed two pigs for the ceremony and it was mainly to protect my family from the spiritual world. Before the ceremony, we would call our relatives, families, and friends to come and help.…
Another focus was to resist bad temptations that are out there. From witnessing meditation for the first time, I realized how important it is to this religion to do this consistently. This meditation is the key to developing your mind, which helps with concentration and helps them maintain good conduct. In this setting, visitors and participates are more drawn to attend services. This is because of the informal feel of the meditation classes.…
Growing up in a Mexican American household, most likely one is to be raised Catholic. Therefore, as a young boy it became ordinary to follow and believe in what my parents instilled in me. Furthermore, I never had the courage to explore any other religion and get a sense of what other religions are about. However, now that I am taking Social Work 461 with Dr. Tillman, one of my assignments is to attend a religious service that is held by a group that is different from mine. As a result, I decided to attend a Buddhist temple to get an insight of what the Buddhist religion is about.…
Buddhist teaching help people become more aware of themselves, and the world around them. They also help steer people’s mindsets away from negative thought and actions. One of the ways to help clear your mind, and follow the ways of the Buddha is by meditating, through the ceremony of Puja. Also by following the Dalai Lama, and what he has had to say about the religion, and the teachings he has spoken about in many of his world tours. These impact on they way Buddhist individuals and the whole community live amongst themselves and in public, with all of them believing in Karma.…
