Christians and Christianity were taboo in early Roman and persistent members of this religion were considered martyrs and put to death. These acts changed when the Roman emperor Constantine became king; his origin of being the face of early Christianity came from a premonition that his sign from the Gods was from the God of Christ with a symbol of a 'P' over an 'X'. His actions before a major battle was to put this symbol from his premonition as a crest for his army; his victory was ignited a turnabout for the positive spread of Christianity. He created monasteries after the ideal of Buddhist monks with the purpose to be a sanctuary for the religion, and a beacon for new member. At the start, the religion mostly appealed to plebeians and lower classes, but Constantine gave great influence to the religion and soon monasteries were in every major city and the Christan Empire was growing internationally.
