In the exposition of Call of the Wild, Buck is described as a strong, masculine dog. As a result of his strength, size and being owned by an adventurous family Call of the Wild mentions how he is used to staying outside and being free to roam around. Buck is also a bit too trusting to humans as proven by Manuel's treachery. As Buck advances on his journey through out the Klondike he will need to keep his strength, and physique in order to tolerate the cold of the Alaskan Mountains. His size and strength will also contribute to his future duty as a sled dog.
