In the short story, “Brownies,” by ZZ Packer, a group of 10 year old black girl scouts display reverse racism, accusing a mentally disable troop of calling them a slur.
In “Brownies,” a young girl nicknamed, snot recounts a summer spent with her “friends” who seem more like bullies. The social leaders of the group Octavia and Arnetta, establish their spot at the top by making crude behavior and condescending comments. Octavia’s actions are partially explained after her mother is introduced as a chaperone. Mrs. Hedy was recently divorced and was obviously still recovering, to her daughter's embarrassment, very publically.
For example h Octavia’s mother and her are speaking to the group and Mrs. Hedy says , in regards to her ex husband,”’ I don't know what Robert will do when Octavia and I are gone. Who’ll buy him cigarettes?’ and Octavia would hotly whispered,’Mama,’ in a way that meant: Please don't talk about our problems in front of everyone. Please shut up.”(Packer, 14) The other head of the clique, Arnetta, was the one to accuse the opposing troop of such a hateful act. Saying they called the quietest girl in the group a n****r. The characters Ralph and Jack are different in the way they lead. Jack could be described as violent, harmful, and uncommunicative whereas Ralph could be described as a trustworthy, equal, and communicative leader. There are many similarities between the Couch family and the Hadley’s on the way they raised their children. However, due to the several differences, the outcome of the children’s behaviour had led to grievous events. Firstly, the similarity between the Couch family and the Hadley’s was that they had overindulged their children, which isolated them from their parents. The Couch family had given Ethan anything he granted, including his own place of residence and a pickup at the age of 13. Comparably, the Hadley’s had given their children exposure to advanced technology (nursery), allowing them to see what they desired.…

Reading Peter's Lullaby moved me to tears, thinking deeply on what kind of monster would do this to innocent children. What Fowler, Peter, and Jill went through was the painful experience any child could go through. They were living in hell in their own parent's home, and the torture they were subjected to was worse than physical and psychological abuse. One is left wondering what the kids ever did to their mother to deserve all that suffering, and again, what kind of alcohol that turns human beings into an animal. Finally, I blame the child welfare services for not taking the girls situation seriously.…
