The British Shorthair The Cat Fanciers’ Association registers cat breeds in the United States and currently recognizes 41 breeds of cats (Romich 442). While there are numerous breeds of cats, one breed in particular called the British Shorthair is one of the most easy-going and versatile breeds. The ancestors of the British Shorthair made their appearance in Britain during the Roman conquest of Europe over 2,000 years ago (Helgren 2). The Romans brought these felines to Europe to help in controlling the vermin population and thus to protect peoples’ food resources and crops.
