The British Anti- Terrorism Act of 2000 was the first act against terrorism. The act allowed the police to hold individuals, who are suspected terrorists in custody for 7 days without unreasonable evidence. The act also gave police the right to stop and search individuals without any probable cause. Under section 43 and 44 it states, “…officers may search any person or vehicle for items related to terrorism. They do not need reasonable grounds to suspect that items will be found.” Under section 41 of the act, police are allowed to arrest individuals without a warrant. In the film, the act was signified unjust when Gerry is arrested in the middle of the night when the police invade his home. The police had no proper evidence to tie him with the bombing, besides unreasonable suspicion. Paul was also arrested without any reasonable evidence. The arresting of Gerry, Paul and Gerry’s father is where the police had made an error because they had no suitable evidence to prove the terrorism act was caused by the specific individuals.
