Brightpaw: A Short Story

“What were you thinking?” The cat’s snarl cut through the air. “You could have been killed, Brightpaw! How many times have I told you that that side of the territory is dangerous?” The brown tabby stood in front of Brightpaw, glaring down at her with wide yellow eyes.

She stared back with defiance gleaming in her own eyes. “You told me to be independent! To take charge of my own education! I did exactly what you asked, Quailfang.”

That you must defend who we are as a people? The point of being in a clan is to stand up for each other and to care for each other. Just look at me; in a few weeks’ time, I'll be giving birth to new life. Back when hunting was done for survival, it became important and it was the reason you lived. It wasn’t fun, it was necessary. In Jennifer Nivens story “All the Bright Places” sensory details are used to help the reader visualize. The text includes Violet and Finch breaking apart from each other. One of visualization is when Finch is in his mental health group and illustrates the picnic that has “ two shining pitchers of lemonade with colorful Dixie cups and cookies at each end.” The words help me see what Finch is seeing and the words have an overall positive connotation. Another example is when Violet bursts into Finch’s room only to behold that “the room has been stripped down to the sheets on the bed.…
