Brief Summary Of 'The Giver'

Jonas had been living in a suppressed community all his entire life. Where the orderly commanded every single aspect of citizens lives. A society without liberty of choice, expression, thinking or feeling. Where the life without color, pain or past described the lack of meaning. A place where there wasn’t possibility for unexpected, inconvenient or unusual situations to happen because most of them were pre-calculated and under control. When the ceremony of twelve came, Jonas was selected as “the Giver” instead of being assigned as usual. His qualities as intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom and the capacity to see beyond were remarked. Besides the honor of the position, Jonas was receiving too: the advantage of knowing the truth, the capacity to discover the real world in which he lived, and the opportunity to spread his knowledge. Jonas received with this assignment the advantage of knowing the truth about how his society was really constructed. The memories contained all the history about the past generations and by acquiring them, was the only way to understand how the community had changed through the years and how was leaded now. According to the Giver “Of course, when you received the memories. You have the capacity to see beyond. You’ll gain wisdom, then along with colors a lots more.”(Lowry, 120) a new world full of color, feelings and memories was the essence of life, the reason why people were alive.
