In chapter nine of All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque uses diction and imagery to establish the theme that the people who are thought to be one’s enemies in war can actually turn out to share some similar qualities with one another. After Paul stabs the soldier who unexpectedly enters the shell hole Paul is in, he instantly regrets the action he has performed. As he watches the man’s life slowly fade away, Paul speaks to the nearly lifeless body and says, “If we threw away these rifles and this uniform you could be my brother just like Kat and Albert” (Remarque 9-10). Paul realizes that what he knows about who his enemy is is all based on the color of the uniform each person is wearing. He uses the word “brother” to describe the inner…

If a literary counterpart to Guernica exists, it is Erich Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front, it portrays the toll of human suffering in World War I, a conflict that ushered in modern weapons of mass destruction, such as tanks and poison gas. However, many tales focus on the glory of the war, such as the epic Beowulf, rather than the devastation. With the help of luck, both Paul and Beowulf conquer opponents that mirror themselves. Despite similar victories, only Beowulf is rewarded.…
This book was composed so the world has the capacity know about the ruthlessness of war. No one is able to comprehend it but rather have the capacity to hear what war was similar to. To have the capacity to hear the confirmation of the abhorrences the fighters were confronted with consistently. The absolute most well-known war motion pictures, for example, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, and The Patriot are all extraordinary war motion pictures. Then again, these motion pictures romanticized what war was similar to.…
“War does not determine who is right- only who is left,” is a quote by Bertrand Russell. This spectrum expresses the casualties of war. In other words, Russell means war is used as an outlet to define a “winner”, or in this case, someone who is right. The veiled truth is that there are no true winners of war when comparing the damage created and the lives lost. Looking at war through that perspective, John F. Kennedy, among others, also agreed.…
World War I was one of the deadliest wars in human history, killing sixteen million soldiers alone, with a total of thirty seven million casualties including civilians. Mankind has been shaped by war throughout its existence. War can vary with type such as guerrilla or nuclear warfare. However, one aspect of war that remains the same is its ability to lay waste to all in its path. War has killed, not only the promising young men and women, but it has killed their dreams and goals.…
We can all agree that death is not a voyage to those who stand face to face with it. In the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque it describes a German soldier’s punishing physical and mental stress during the First World War, as well as the detachment from civilian life. In addition, returning back to the civilian life after experiencing war is a challenge for soldiers. In All Quiet on the Western Front each of the soldier’s lives are enduringly changed by war, they have to deal with guilt, the questions inquired, and coping with how to live.…
Paul and all the other soldiers have murdered others because they’re fighting for their country, but the enemy is fighting for the same cause, it is a never ending cycle of death and sorrow. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque the author displays how a man’s identity, youth, and innocence is abolished in the war. From shellings and bombardments, to playing skat and going home, Paul and his comrades have had their lives vanish before their eyes. War is more than just an event that reoccurs over time, it is a bloodbath of innocent people who don’t deserve what ultimately will come, death.…
One soldier says to Paul "If your father came over with them, you wouldn't hesitate to fling a bomb at him". This is showing how that because Paul is so focused on Killing anyone who comes from the opposition's side so that he can survive he wouldn't notice if he knew them or not. Paul, along with the other German soldiers are made to become mindless puppets. They have no knowledge of who they are killing and why. War has striped Paul and the other soldiers of knowing who they are, and of individual actions.…
In his book, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque is characterizing a young generation who lost everything in the Great War. He describes how Paul the main character, and his comrades perish one by one to the brutality of the war. The author describes how they become more dehumanized, as they fight endlessly for nothing. Because in many of the fiercest battles of the war, there is hardly any territory won or lost, yet the casualties are huge. Finally, the book has an anti-war message prevalent throughout as strong theme.…
In Why War?—a series of correspondence between him and Albert Einstein—Sigmund Freud argues that war is solution for the societal elite to accomplish their goals without getting directly involved in conflict. Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front echoes the sentiments and ideas expressed by Sigmund Freud. Freud states that war is an inevitable process towards the progression of society at the cost of individuality, and his sentiments can be seen through Remarque’s portrayal of his characters and their reactions to their situation.…
