Overview of the Crank Trilogy The books that I chose to do my report on were the Crank trilogy, Crank, Glass, and Fallout, by Ellen Hopkins. Crank was published in 2004, Glass was published in 2007, and the last book, Fallout came out in 2013. Ellen Hopkins wrote these books when she had a personal experience when her daughter, Kristina, started using "the monster" after she met the wrong person. She wrote the books to help herself understand why her daughter did it, then she realized that other people would relate to it and how many people had the same story.…

The short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates is a fictional story, but I believe that it could be realistic. There are times that young girls can get themselves into situations they cannot escape. Connie tries to appear older and wiser than she is, and her head is filled with daydreams and music that give her ideas of romance and love. Connie rejects the role of the daughter, sister and “nice” girl to cultivate her sexual persona, which only came out when she was away from home. When she is at home, her sexuality goes into hiding. “Everything about her had two sides it, one for home and one for anywhere that was not home.”…

At what point does a girl become a woman? In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”, author Joyce Carol Oates tells the story of a relatable girl, named Connie, and her initiation into womanhood. While maturity, independence, and handsome boys attract Connie to the adult world, her perfect dream of adulthood is interrupted by antagonist male forces and an internal conflict between protection and self-reliance. Throughout the short story, Connie attempts to prove that she is a grown woman by rejecting the submissiveness of her sister and exploring her sexuality. However, Connie’s realization of the discrepancies between her fantasies and reality reduces her to fear and helplessness.…

Lee’s works have been proven to be innovative in the sense that it covers most, if not all of the issues that arise in the black community. This statement is evident especially when he created one of my favorite films, Crooklyn. This is a film that goes into the “ideal” life of African Americans in the seventies. The most important idea to notice in this film is feminism. Feminism is so broad and shown in narrower topics that relate to it in this dramatic work.…

One of the major themes in Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild is the father-son relationship between father Walt McCandless and his son, Chris. This theme specifically plays a significant role in Chris’s life because it shows how Chris was brought up and what made him want to partake in a journey across the country to Alaska without bothering to contact his family. Right from the start, Chris was a brilliant, independent, and competitive child. Chris inherited some of these strong features from his father, and would end up using it against him. Krakauer mentions, “[Walt] Taking control is something he does unconsciously, reflexively…his voice has an edge, and the set of his jaw betrays an undercurrent of nervous energy.…
