He is about to kill Luke as he orders Jace to restrain Clary, but Clary manages to knock Jace back to senses that family is not defined by blood, but by bond. Jace refuses to follow Valentine, and Luke is freed, but Valentine, furious, kills Luke’s second in command and escapes into the portal with the Cup, tempting Jace to kill him.
