Research Paper: Veterinary Medicine

My specific field of writing is veterinary medicine and this is the medical science that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disorder, injury, and disease in animals (Richards). This field covers animals of all species, domestic and wild. Some would define veterinarians as doctors but for animals and this very true. Veterinarians have to complete just about the same training as doctors do. To become a veterinarian, you have to complete four and a half years of undergraduate education before you move on to veterinary school. Once you attend veterinary school you will receive an education that is same as to what medical school students receive but instead you learn about multiple species instead of just one. These writings describe introductory or small amounts of research that do not take up a full article. They are often used to communicate results of pilot studies to other veterinarians and are less structured than full length reports (Christopher & Young, 2011). Brief Communications are also “reports involving single animals and common medical conditions” (American Association of Zoo Veterinarians [AAZV]). The format of this type of writing is still very informational but instead of having many different headings discussing the different features of the research, a brief communication is all together because it is only featuring one topic. Brief communications consist of a summary or abstract, the narrative, and references. An example of this type of writing would be this excerpt from a brief communication called “Short communication: Lactic acid bacteria from the honeybee inhibit the in vitro growth of mastitis pathogens” by Olofsson, Piccart, Piepers, Vasquez, and …show more content…
Two veterinary associations are the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association for Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV). The AVMA is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1863 and it represents 88,000 veterinarians. The mission of this organization is to “...lead the profession by advocating for its members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health”(American Veterinary Medical Association). To join this association it costs $330 a year or $165 a year if you are a recent graduate. Some of the top issues that this association has brought attention to are veterinarians needing access to compounding and the need for rural communities to get veterinary care. I myself live in a rural community so for my essay I could look into what the AVMA has to say about the veterinary care in rural communities issue. Since I want to be a zoo veterinarian I also looked into the AAZV. This association was established in 1946 and consists of over 1000 members. The mission of this organization is to “...optimize the health, welfare, and conservation of zoo animals and wildlife through education, scientific study, collaboration and advocacy” (The American Association for Zoo Veterinarians). There are many different categories for membership in this association. If you are actively engaged in

From vaccinating kittens to resuscitating a critical care patient, small animal veterinarians help pet owners create the best life for their companions. Taking care of my pets has been an irreplaceable experience, and I hope to help form similar relationships. Other types of veterinarians focus on research, foreign diseases, and the protection of our food supply. Veterinarians are increasingly dealing with the spread of zoonotic diseases such as the avian flu, leptospirosis, and salmonella. In less privileged countries, these diseases greatly affect food supply, so it is extremely important for vets to be immersed in our environment's health.…
