As a diverse student with a variety of interests and passions, the liberal arts program and energetic community atmosphere at Bates draws me to its campus. I enjoy learning many different subjects and discovering the connections between them all. Recently, my Physics teacher and my Calculus teacher collaborated on a problem the class was assigned and I was able to see how both teachers concurred the same issue from different angles. I had no substantial idea what I wanted to study until an evening the summer after my sophomore year in high school. My mom invited me to watch livestream of Senator Wendy Davis filibustering the now-famous Senate Bill 5, which greatly restricted access to abortion in Texas. At the time I hadn’t even taken high school government and I knew nothing about the process I was watching. However, once my mom explained the bill, I realized I agreed with Senator Davis and her supporting colleagues and admired her strength in standing up against an unrepresentative majority.
