Breastmil's Monologue

On March thirtieth two thousand thirteen, I gave birth to my sixth child and second son William Jonah Sanchez. Little William was such a beautiful baby boy and my older son Noah who is autistic was so happy to have a little brother. Over the next few months of his life, W.J, as we affectionately call him, struggled to gain weight and was slowly falling off the growth charts. I was having to take W.J to doctor’s visits several times a week to no avail. The only thing every doctor agreed on was that I needed to stop nursing my son. They had various reasons behind their recommendations, he was allergic to my milk (not possible as he would have died before he left the hospital), I was not producing enough milk, I did not know how to breastfeed …show more content…
IGA stands for immunoglobulin A which protects you from respiratory and gut infections. The only way to replace IGA is through breastmilk. Not only was my breastmilk fine but it was helping his immune system. In July of that year I took a picture of W.J and I noticed his head seemed oddly shaped. I took my son to the pediatrician a couple days later and when I mentioned his head shape the doctor thought he was okay but ordered a CT scan just to be sure. At first the radiologist thought everything was fine but the next day they changed their mind and my son was diagnosed with Sagittal Suture Craniosynostosis. My son’s skull was fused along the sagittal suture. On September fifth of that year W.J underwent surgery to remove fifteen percent of his skull followed by one year of helmet therapy. For four years, my husband had been encouraging me to go back to school to become a RN, but I was hesitant to go back because I was content working as a LPN. After going through this journey with my son I felt a calling from God that I was needed as a RN to help children going through surgery and other health

It has taken me quite a while to decide upon a major, but when I started looking into nursing, it was like everything just clicked. There have been many factors that led to this decision. The biggest one of all is my mother’s last pregnancy. Towards the end of her third trimester, she started having difficulties especially with her blood pressure. I remember being with her in the hospital and watching as a doctor and a couple of nurses fluttered in and out of her room.…

Another misconception surrounding these patients is whether they are able to breastfeed the babies that are going through Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. These patients should be educated that with even while using some substances, they are still able to breastfeed and should be encouraged to ask their obstetrician about safe medication with breastfeeding as well as the pediatrician to talk about risks of transmitting the medication or substances to the baby (McQueen, Murphy-Oikonen, and Desaulniers, 2015). Breastfeeding has such positive effects for babies medically related to immunity and development among a host of other things (Goettler and Tschudin, 2014).…

Secretory IgA “guards against invading germs by forming a protective layer on the mucous membranes in your baby 's intestines, nose, and throat” (“How Breastfeeding”). A few days after the baby is born, the colostrum turns into mature breast milk that will start to come into the breasts. The difference between the two types of milk is very obvious. Colostrum is a yellow color, and the human body does not create very much of it because it is so packed with vitamins.…

IgA is responsible for defending against microorganisms at body surfaces that are lined with mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, and GI tract.16 IgA is found in the bloodstream, in secretions made by mucous membranes (in tears and saliva), and in the colostrum.16 IgM is found in the bloodstream and is made when an antigen is encountered for the very first time.16 When IgM attaches to the antigen, the complement system is activated, allowing the microorganism to be easier to engulf.16 IgE is responsible for triggering allergic reactions.16 These antibodies bind to basophils and mast cells.16 When these units come in contact with allergens, they release substances such as histamines to cause inflammation and damage nearby tissues.16 IgE is found in small amounts in the bloodstream and digestive system.16 Individuals with allergic disorders have higher amounts of IgE.16 IgD is found on the surface of most B cells but their exact function is unknown.17 IgG is found in the bloodstream and tissues.16 IgG is produced when the body is exposed to an antigen a second time and is responsible for protection against microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses.16 There are four subclasses of human IgG: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4.3 Since IgG1, IgG3, IgG4 can cross the placenta, they are responsible for protecting the developing fetus .3 IgG3 also plays a role in complement activation and helps with opsonization.3 IgA and IgM exist as dimers and pentamers,…
