Cancer, we all fear it but there is so much that we do not know. Breast Cancer itself is not local to only women. Not many know that men can get it too. We must do everything we can to detect breast cancer in an early stage allowing more treatment options. For example, we need to be informed on the cancer along with completing monthly exams. The amount of women that have breast cancer are diagnosed later than they should have been because without doing the self exams we don’t know anything is wrong until after we start to show symptoms. If you are able to detect this early why not do so.

There are times where the lumps may be too small to be detected in a breast exam and in order to confirm them you should have a mammogram which is an x-ray of the breast. This will confirm or dismiss any suspicions.
Treatments for breast cancer are based on the benefits, stage, and type of the cancer. There are two types of treatments, local and systemic. Local treatments are either surgery or radiation therapy. These are only used if the tumor can be accessed without having to disrupt the rest of the body. Whenever treatment needs to reach anywhere in the body systemic treatments are done. This consist of Chemotherapy, Hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and bon-directed therapy. This cancer can also be treated with oral drugs. (“Cancer treated”, 1)
Once you’ve been treated and if it was successful there are ways you can help minimize the chance of it returning. In some cases, a mastectomy may be right for you. A mastectomy is the removal of the whole breast, and there are five types. Simple or total, modified radical mastectomy, radical, partial, and subcutaneous.
