Breakthrough Personal Statement

I am interested in teaching at Breakthrough as a Teaching Fellow this summer because Breakthrough is where I discovered my passion. Working with the students as a volunteer last summer, and as a teacher during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school-year program, was something I looked forward to every day as I got to know each of our special students. I discovered that working with kids, who often say exactly what they are thinking and choose to find joy and positivity in all aspects of life, was something I absolutely love and something that makes me truly happy. It is difficult to convey the joy and comfort I find in teaching, and how much I value the opportunity to change a child's life for the better by offering the support they may not have

I want to thank you for the offer at Project Brilliance. The place is great and the little time I spent there brought me great memories as when I was an adaptive physical educator. Unfortunatlly, I would have to decline your offer; the salary compensation does not adjust to my family needs. I wish you the best in this great educational setting. It will definetelly make a difference In a child's life and its family.…

There are several experiences in my life where I have felt that I was treated in an unfair manner, but the most recent of those experiences is the one that occurred to me only months prior to this application. Up until the beginning of November of this year, I used to believe that being a great and successful student would be the most rewarding accomplishment of my senior high career. As a result of this, I unwisely assumed that the most important thing in my life was how well I could do on the next test. I spent a meager amount of my time involved in anything else aside from my homework or studying; expecting to be fairly remunerated for a majority of my hard work. Earlier this year, I was indeed rewarded with an application to National Honors…

My Personal Goal Statement Every day I wake up, I ask myself how I can make a difference. This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. Growing up in West Africa and witnessing firsthand the sufferings and impoverishment of the people around me, I developed a sense of compassion and willingness to make a difference and help alleviate their sufferings and put a smile on their faces. Healthcare delivery and poverty are two major underlying factors in the challenges faced in Africa, thus, when I got an opportunity to come into the United States, it was my golden ticket to finally give back to the community and make a difference. This led me into the nursing field; I started out as a Certified Nurse Assistant.…

Opportunity to Success I am not born to a rich family that has everything I want and need and clearly I am not born with any amazing skills either. I am just a normal person who is lucky enough to receive the wonderful opportunity of a formal education in America. Despite my family’s lack of English language skills and the limitations of my family’s resources, I have been able to navigate myself through the American educational system. With hard work, many hours of studying and dedication to school, I have found success in high school in just four years of speaking English. However, my hard work is not over yet.…

I was 13 years old when I had my first scientific epiphany. My high school biology class was studying the brain and that day we’d been taught that no new neurons formed during adulthood. I remember reading a copy of MIT's Technology Review magazine that night in my parent's living room. There was a short article about new research on neurogenesis: new neurons formed in some areas of the adult brain. At the time, I was not so much floored by the fact that new neurons formed in adulthood, but that even in the 21st century, there was still new discoveries to be made and that my textbooks still didn’t have it all quite right.…

While I come from an agriculturally-focused family, my interests as a young boy were divided between aviation and computers. At the age of 13, I began to focus more on my digital hobbies after a neighbor offered to assist me in learning the art of programming. During the next few years, he mentored me in software development using primarily C# with the .NET Framework. In that time, I created a collection of small personal applications and games as I experimented with code and concepts. At age 17, I became interested in interacting with the physical world through the digital one with the use of microcontrollers.…

Achievement is something we as humans crave. When you accomplish or achieve a goal, the overwhelming emotion of pride is indescribable. I’ve heard it said that you can’t have a great story without a great beginning. Apparently, it’s impossible to have a decent story marked by ordinary things. Whoever said that has obviously never lived life, because all the best stories of my life have started with the terrifyingly mundane. This particular one begins with a skateboard. It’s funny isn’t it; how the turning points in our lives can be marked by something so mundane.…

Everyone’s journey in life is different so to speak; we each pick different paths based on decisions that we make. When I reflect and think about myself I realized that I have come a long way in my short 22 years of life for someone whose life has not changed extremely drastically in any sense. For the very first half of my life, everything was very steady. That was until I went into high school where my life changed in many different ways because I decided to go through different paths that I would never have expected to turn on to. Through self-reflection now I am almost glad that they occurred despite the difficulties that came along with it.…
