Overcoming an ACL Tear It’s game time, the whistle blows and the game begins. The first half passes and it’s 1-0 for the home team, it’s been pretty uneventful. Thankfully, there haven’t been any injuries, and the game has been clean.…
Ellie Caffee was chosen as a member of the 2018 All Resilient Team by Tom Leach. This group “celebrates high school male and female student-athletes who overcome adversity on their path to success. It might be an injury, a disability, a difficult family or health circumstance--something that puts an obstacle in their path that might derail someone who is less resilient.” While playing travel softball last July, Ellie broke her fibula sliding in to second base. Her immediate thoughts at the hospital were concern for her senior season of basketball.…
Unlike Reuven, I was not batting at the time of the accident but instead I was stealing second base, which I did so successfully in the fact that I was safe but unsuccefully in the fact that I broke my arm. I knew instantly that it was broken and immediately left the field and went to the doctor and had my arm set and put into a full arm cast that was hot pink. At the time I was only twelve and the cast made it so I could not fully extend my arm so simple tasks like doing my hair or buttoning my pants up became impossible to do by myself. This injury also took me out of softball for the rest of the season and also out of school volleyball that same year.…
My Knee Surgery First varsity basketball game, first quarter, 3:53 left on the clock. We were playing Ridgway at the time. On defense, everything was going great. I got a steal up the left hand side and I was pushing so hard ready to score the first 2 points of the game.…
Likely enough, I suffered my first major injury in a taekwondo tournament; I broke my left ankle trying to kick my sparring opponent in the face. I couldn 't put any pressure on my foot or else I would risk further injuring it, this led me to becoming depressed and helpless. I had to resort to surgery if I wanted to walk again; my experiences during the recovery process foreshadowed my desire to become an occupational therapist. After the surgery, my doctor recommended me to an occupational therapist in jersey city. My occupational therapist was kind hearted and he made my recovery process such a breeze, and I actually looked forward to seeing him every week.…
I broke my collarbone that day on that day changed my life. I layed down on the couch for the whole summer because, I couldn't do anything I could barely sit up. Every little movement hurt and all I could think of is baseball and fishing, like how I couldn't go fishing with my friends and play baseball. My summer was ruined and miserable I never felt so pissed at myself and I couldn't imagine what my dad was thinking. I don’t even like to talk about because, how mad I get talking about to where I could be playing baseball and getting better at that and fishing.…
Leading up to my junior year baseball season, the team and myself had very high expectations. We won the first game of the season; I pitched and played shortstop and had a triple and a single. During the next game, I came up to bat in the third inning and popped up a pitch to the first basemen. In midst of my swing, I felt a sharp pain in my left shoulder, thus causing me to kneel on the ground in pain. I was substituted out the next inning, then sat on the bench holding ice on my shoulder.…
My trainer was coaching me at a rodeo to show me how to get my horse into the gate because she is very hyper when it is her time to run. When I was walking in she penned my legs up against a gate and then tried to take off running tearing the muscles in my knee. I needed surgery to have it fixed but rodeo was not over yet, so I finished the whole rodeo season then had surgery to repair my knee. I did have to stop doing some of my events because my knee was not strong enough to support my weight. I recovered and am back doing what I love today; I do still have to wear a knee brace though.…
I have always been fascinated with the human body and its complexities. However, it wasn’t until I fractured my ankle in the final soccer playoff game before the state championship that my passion was ignited. It was my senior year and I had helped my team reach the state championship…
I was devastated. Everything I worked for was gone. I sat out and had surgery. I had to sacrifice my body every day to get stronger after the surgery. I pushed the limit daily, being careful to not go too far and re-injure my ACL.…
Around 92% of all basketball players will have an ankle sprain at least one time during their playing career. Most basketball injuries are sprains, strains or contusions (muscle damage by impact) meaning the most common injured area for basketball players are either their ankle or knee. Here are the typical injuries found in basketball and what to do if they occur. Sprained Ankle One of the most frequent injuries is when a player rolls their ankle - where the sole of the foot faces inwards. This type of injury causes damage to the anterior talofibular ligament and in some cases the calcaneofibular ligament.…
I felt a sharp pain, suddenly stopped, and fell to the ground. I had to be carried off the field. I didn’t even get hit by anything, something just felt like it snapped. There was an ice-pack on my leg, slowly freezing it until I couldn’t feel it anymore. Right after the game finished, we went straight to the ER.…
I was now playing on a select team and also on a premier club team. I was feeling great. During my eighth grade school soccer season, I was the top scorer for my team and I had high hopes of making Varsity soccer as an entering freshman. Two weeks prior to the start of soccer season, I broke my ankle playing indoor soccer. I was overcome with more disappointment than imaginable.…
My First Broken Bone The time I broke my first bone, I was tumbling and the event affected me greatly. It had a major impact on the way I thought and my mindset when it comes to achieving my goals. Sometimes, things happen in life that bring us down and make us doubt ourselves, but no matter what happens, we should always keep striving to reach our goals. Which is what I had to do when I was going through a rough time in tumbling. On an afternoon in June of 2011, I attended my normal tumbling class at Full FX in Port Arthur, Texas.…
My freshman year during soccer season, we were in the championship game at a tournament, we went to double overtime and it was into PK’s. I was the only freshman to shoot a PK on varsity, and I was extremely nervous. I had to block out the chanting crowd, ignore the freezing wind, and focus solely on turning my hips at just the right angle. My mental toughness allowed me to make the game winning PK. I knew I had to be mentally tough during state volleyball whenever I had a torn labrum in my right shoulder, tendinitis in my right rotator cuff, damage to my MCL and my LCL, and two bone bruises on my right knee-cap.…
