Bread And Circuses Research Paper

The term “Bread and Circuses” is used to describe a superficial meaning of appeasement. In the Roman Empire they used food to fill the people and entertainment, such as chariot races and gladiators, to distract them, so that emperors could rule as they pleased. Plebians, the average working class, had little power. However, there were far more people in this class than in the upper class. When there was unrest the rulers would become worried the plebians might rebel. Emperor Augustus was aware of this risk. As a result, he created the concept that the writer Juvenal described as “ Bread and Circuses”. This system of state bribery included free entertainment, free grain, and controlled food prices.
“Bread and Circuses” made sure that the plebians were kept happy and distracted, so that the upper class could gain more power. If they did not have this system the lower class could have potentially rebelled. They had little power and lots of people, while the upper class consisted of lots of power and not very many people. It would be the most effective way to raise power because the rulers would gain the votes of new citizens coming to the empire.

Meritocracy is where there is a ruling of the educated and skilled, the power held was equal to the ability of a person. Within the book Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic by Tom Holland there were some instances where it highlights such things being portrayed, as there were common men who would come into higher power through their skills and abilities. As there were some Romans who had a thirst for power and an unending ambition, that eventually leads to the fall of the Roman Empire. The Republic of Rome was a meritocracy as people would gain power depending on their skills and abilities, the Emperors that would come into power gave less opportunity of such things occurring.…

The Parisian “Exposition Universelle” of 1889, held to commemorate the storming of the Bastille, mesmerized the world with its artistic and architectural elegance. America, on the other hand, exhibited a humiliatingly lifeless and motley arrangement. Intent on redemption, America, lead by architect Daniel H. Burnham, organized the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, or the World’s Columbian Exposition, to honor the quadricentennial of Columbus’s “discovery” of America. To establish whether the fair led to America’s rise as a superpower while impacting the country’s future, it is necessary to consider the changes made to America by the event. Industrially, the exposition debuted visionary innovations and beliefs.…

As a result of the new coinage based economy, the aristocracy gained more power both publically and privately. Beginning in the third century and continuing throughout the rest of the period, the economy became increasingly centered on money.…
