Conditioning the characters is a form of having them imprisoned in the state because no one knows any better. Everyone is happy now because soma is given as candy and no one feels any other emotion. When lying on a death bed, “there’s one thing we can be certain of; whoever he may have been, he was happy when he was alive. Everybody’s happy now” (p. 65). The citizens lack individuality in the world state. Each person is a carbon copy of another and no one is able to think for themselves. The conditioning they go through clouds their emotions and judgment. Mustapha Mond is one of the smartest people in the world state – smart enough to understand Shakespeare ¬– believes that when exposed to the wrong material the castes in the world state will get the wrong idea of their conditioning: “Once you [begin] admitting explanations in terms of purpose – well, you don’t know what the result may be … some enlargement of knowledge” (p. 155). As each inhabitant is carefully conditioned to be like another, the main priority of the world state once again, is “Community, Identity, Stability”. When exposed to the wrong kind of material, the people start to think about themselves in terms of purpose. The world state will not be able to function the same way. The world state also known as the society of imprisonment, confined each citizen with their psychological conditioning and their power of soma. Each inhabitant lacks individuality and they fail to understand each other. Why is it so important that freedom is achieved? The motto of the world state tricks the citizens into thinking that they have attained the uppermost freedom and are pleased with the way they live their lives. The world state holds the citizens captive. Each inhabitant is not allowed to think about more than their happiness but they are physically incapable of feeling any other emotion that can lead to their true freedom. The citizens of the world state don’t know what true freedom means due to being slaves to their own society of imprisonment, their take on soma; the drug that restricts the growth of their personality and being stuck in their own form of conditioning.
