Brain Breaks In the fight to keep children focused in the classroom, two articles, one by Curriculum Review and the other by Michelle Gay, believe in two different brain break techniques. “Brain Breaks,” by Michelle Gay was published in 2009. Gay is currently a Seminar Leader for Landmark Worldwide. Curriculum Review is the author of “Yoga at School Helps Give Kids Brain Breaks and Reduces Stress.” They wrote this brief, but informational article in January 2017. Both authors support brain breaks, but take different stances on the use for them. The two articles show different ways brain breaks can be beneficial. Gay introduces four different brain breaks that are not only active, but help with behavior. Review writes about yoga, and how it …show more content…
(Review 5). One of them being to take yoga breaks throughout the day (5). Meaning doing a short and simple yoga position between transitions of subjects. Secondly, breathing techniques. One example Review states is “extended exhaling or count your breaths” (5). Then writes partner yoga. By doing this, students can interact with their classmates and learn how to work in groups. Next is to “introduce a new pose every week” (5). This will keep the students entertained and eager to learn more. Then Review writes to count while holding a pose (5). This will test the students and encourage them to better themselves each week. Then to look for patterns in poses (5). Lastly, Review writes to “take five minutes before a test to do a breathing exercise together” (5). By doing this, students can relax before a test and this could possibly improve their score. These yoga exercises benefit teachers as well as the students. When closing their article, Review quotes a physical education teacher who said yoga is popular in the classroom because “they can keep teaching while they are moving” …show more content…
As the brief description suggests, this article focuses on how brain breaks can improve the student’s behavior. She also gives alternative moves for kids who enjoy the activity. For example, for “Skateboard in Class,” Gay suggests the child single-leg hopping or “coasting.” This simple move can improve the child’s balance and core strength. (Gay 68). Gay also addresses how the activity can improve their classroom etiquette. When describing “Smart Feet Standing,” Gay writes that this activity refines student’s attention, posture, and eye-contact
