About a year prior on March 10, 2009, BP submitted an evaluation plan to the U.S. Department of Minerals Management Service (MMS) in case of blowout, which in the report, contained inconsistencies and illogical statements. The following timeline is consistent with multiple articles but mostly deriving from "Special Report: Why the BP Oil Rig Blowout Happened,” written by Carl Hoffman.
October 7, 2009
- BP began drilling on a rig called “the Marianas” but due to a hurricane in November 2009, the rig was damaged. Transocean, a well-known drilling company, was hired by BP to take care of the drilling of the Horizon rig. February of 2010,
- The introduction of the Horizon well was brought about and drilling resumed. Although the scheduled completion date for the well was 78 days from start, BP insisted completion within 51 days, 26 days prior to the standard finish date in order to cut the 96 million dollar budget of the well.
Early March:
- Due to increased drilling speed, workers were forced to backtrack 2000 feet from the 13,000-foot hole and plug the cracked sections with cement because of a fracture in the
