Boy Scouts Traditions

Trustworthy, Loyal, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. These twelve words may not mean a thing to most people, but to people like me across the world it is a promise we made at a young age. Sir Baden Powel in England founded Boy Scouts. It was based on morals and militaristic order to teach children how to learn new skills and how to act with good morals. After it transferred to the United States the Boy Scouts of America mirrored its British counterpart. The traditions that drove the organization since the 1800’s continued into the United States. From a young age these traditions drove how I interact with others like many other boys across the world. The world of honor and commitment, the world of doing a good turn daily, the world of being prepared where others aren’t, this world is where I come from. This has morphed my thought …show more content…
Before Boy Scouts of America, I was a kid who wouldn’t try to understand people. I have ADHD, PTSD, and Asperger syndrome which impeded my social growth. Boy Scouts started to help with understanding that ADHD is okay to have but it needs to be treated. Through Boy Scouts I learned how to relax some and work with medication I was given. After a while I started taking rifle shooting with .22 rifles. My PTSD is related to guns so to start the class wasn’t the most pleasant class. After some time many scoutmasters worked with me to overcome my deep fear of gunshots and I eventually became an instructor for rifling, advanced rifling, and free shooting. However it was my Asperger syndrome that takes the most amount of work. Throughout being in boy scouts, you are required to take leadership training classes to harden your abilities as a leader. This however comes with a side effect for me. I couldn’t interact well with others. If

When I initially began Boy Scouts, I largely depended on my brother and his friends for help and assistance. Eventually, my brother and his friends around his age graduated, and while many moved on to serve as adult leaders, all of them eventually left for college. With this large amount of support missing from my usual routine, I felt lost for a significant amount of time, before I participated in a Philmont trek in the summer before my freshman year of high school. During the Philmont trek, as the youngest member of the crew, I felt highly unprepared due to my overall lack of experience with high adventure and large amounts of leadership; however, despite developing a blister on the first day, I found solace with my crew as they taught me valuable skills that would help me survive the journey. From their exemplary leadership and teachings, I quickly learned not only how to help myself, but also how to assist and guide others as a leader.…

If George Washington and Robert E. Lee were young men today, they would be Boy Scouts and enthusiastic supporters of Scouting, as I am. In fact, in his Sept. 1796 letter to Alexander Hamilton, George Washington himself promoted youth assemblies and behavior strikingly similar to Boy Scout camporees that would take place 125 years in the future: “…but that which would render it of the highest importance, in my opinion, is that at the juvenile period of life, when friendships are formed and habits established that stick by one, young men from different parts of the United States would be assembled together, and would by degrees discover that there was not that cause for those jealousies and prejudices which one part of the Union had imbibed against another.” In my literature class recently, we were discussing how a nation moves from savagery to civilization.…

From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…
