Sonic Hedgehog Research Paper

Try to compare yourself to another species, pick anything, from something as complex as an ape to something as simple as a sponge. Are you having trouble? What can we possibly have in common with a creature so abundantly different than us? Although it may come as a shock that we have anything in common with an entirely different species, we are comparable in many ways. Our similarities with other organisms may not be phenotypic. If you take a closer look into the DNA of other species and compare them to our own you will find something astonishing, we have similar genes. Many uninformed people assume that new genes and DNA are created for new species and structures; that statement is inaccurate. Our genes and DNA evolved over time, the proof …show more content…
The scientists Tabin, McMahon, and Ingham found the gene in flies that made one end of a body segment look different from another, they called it hedgehog. The mammal equivalent is called Sonic Hedgehog. Sonic Hedgehog is present in a variety of different species. The gene turns on during the same time in these various species; it works by having each digit develop differently depending on the distance from the gene. Our thumbs and pinky look different due to sonic hedgehog. An experiment was conducted where the Sonic Hedgehog from a chicken was moved to the opposite side, the result was a duplication of that limb. They continued this experiment on sharks, the result was similar to those of chicken, their fins duplicated. This shows Sonic Hedgehog has similar effects on various kinds of organisms. Another test was conducted, where they took Sonic Hedgehog from a mouse and implanted it into a skate embryo. The result showed that Sonic Hedgehog worked a similar way in skates and humans, the rods in the skate developed differently from one another depending on the distance from the gene. This shows that the genetic recipe of mammals closely resembles those of fish. Similarities with our genes to develop limbs are also seen in the fish Coelacanth, which have not evolved much over the past 400 million years. Some consider it a “living fossil”. The gene enhancer controls the development of limbs. It is present in both the coelacanth and four legged creatures, although the Coelacanth does not use the enhancer gene itself. Neil Shubin was part of the team that conducted the experiment where they took the enhancer gene from Coelacanth and injected it into a mouse, the mouse developed an almost normal mouse limb. This shows the enhancer in Coelacanth successfully let a mouse limb develop, proving the genes are similar. Its profound that a gene that makes four legged limbs is present in a fish lacking them. During the “Whale Tales” I observed, that the Pakicetus was more of a land animal that had a long skull and long teeth unlike the Ambulocetus which had more aquatic lifestyle with shorter legs, feet enlarged like paddles, and had a long and muscular tale. In other words, the Pakicetus was a land animal and had land features unlike the Ambulocetus which lived in the ocean and had body features for swimming. This means that the Ambulocetus evolved from the Pakicetus because one was a land animal while the other one was a water animal and had similar body parts. This shows evolution because it shows that these two whales evolved from each other from being a land animal who could barely swim to a water animal who barely lived on land. This supports my claim because it shows how evolution occurred with whales and it compared two…

In the article What Makes Us Different, Katherine Pollard examines the comparisons of the genomes of chimpanzees and humans. Pollard’s goal was to understand the sequences of DNA bases and letters in the genome as well as the understanding of how the human genome was evolved through years. Pollard had begun on finding DNA sequences that set chimps and humans apart after having some evidence she revealed that human DNA blueprints are 99 percent identical to our closest living relative chimpanzees. Furthermore, she discovered that the three billion letters that made up the human genome approximately fifteen million of them has been changed over time from the time when humans and chimps origins separated. According to the evolutionary theory,…

To better understand the inner workings of our bodies and to trace the origins of many of today's most common diseases; we have to turn to unexpected sources: worms, flies, and even fish. Hedgehogs are by far, one of the ugliest sorts of creatures we take home as pets. Much like a rat, yet covered with long hair that makes them look spiked, hedgehogs are a bit more friendly and absolutely fat, often getting stuck on their large backs, flailing their short, stubby legs in every direction. It is no question that these animals are not attractive to look at. On the other hand, when seeing them play, popping their head out of your favorite coffee mug, or cuddled up in the tiniest of blankets, or wearing the holiday hats you dress them in without protest, they seem not very ugly at all, actually quite adorable and cute. Not only in hedgehogs, but in every aspect of life, there is something both beautiful and ugly to be found.…

While reading the book Genome by Matt Ridley, I started to hone in on some of the key topics and main ideas to take away from this novel. It was a very interesting read that introduced new ideas to me. Many of the ideas in the book applied directly to our Biology class. Some topics that were covered in lecture can be directly applied to the book. Matt Ridley talks about many important things in his novel; however, I feel as if the chapters of life, species, and environment are the most relatable to lecture as well as our biology class as a whole.…

There have been multiple species that have roamed the very Earth we roam today. Two of which are the Neanderthal species, that has gone extinct, and the Homo sapiens species, which happens to be a species that is still present in this day and age. The Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens species are two species that can both be very distinct, but can also be very similar when it comes time to compare and contrast the two. Not only are there obvious physical differences/similarities among both, but there are also mental. You’d be surprise to see how much our species is so closely alike to an alternate one.…

In Neil Shubins’ “Your Inner Fish: A Journey Into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body”, he takes the audience on the journey of the discovery and history of how different organisms and adaptations have converged to form a relationship between fish and tetrapods. Shubins first relates the evolutionary fact that humans and other forms of “tetrapods’ major body systems have developed from fish and sharks” (20), through his time on the field as a paleontologist. He describes his multiple experiences of planning, preparing, excavating, and analyzing not only the fossils found by his team, but also where and when in the rock these artifacts were found. His research and expenditures led to discoveries of bones and fossils that he would…

Have you ever caught yourself acting like your mom or dad? Nature vs nurture debate is an interesting discussion about whether genetics or parenting has a bigger impact on our lives. Nature is genetics a pretty big thing to make the person we are today. But then we have another big part, nurture, which is the environment we live in. My opinion is that nurture is more powerful, because it is how we are raised and where we live.…
