Lesson Pl Progressivel Heterogeneous Grouping

This lesson plan outlines an excellent activity; however, it does not include instruction for modeling proper underhand form, or time for warm ups and stretches in the sequencing. The fast-paced, competitive activity does not allow time to scaffold or correct improper form or procedure. Also, the lesson plan identifies the standards that it covers, but it does not indicate any lesson objectives. Additionally, there is no condition, behavior or criterion to properly assess if the standards are being met. Team grouping is not defined. As the lesson plan is currently set, team selection infers student selected. This promotes students of similar skill grouping together and creating an environment that divides students. The differentiation supplied is great for students with advanced skill, but there is no differentiation for students with lower skill, or other impairments. This activity outlines a great game, but it is a poorly constructed lesson plan.
This lesson plan does not do a very good job at differentiating for multiple abilities or interests. The lesson plan only differentiates for students with advanced athletic skills. It states that they can challenge themselves by

“Research of the effects of heterogeneous grouping on low-achievers indicate positive effects on achievement, self-esteem, and intergroup relations” (National Middle School Academy, 1999). I would create the mixed ability groups by categorizing students based on physical abilities and special needs. One physical education teacher categorizes students into three groups: highly competitive skilled students, confident mid skilled students, and students continuing to work on skills.
