“Although the laws of segregation have been removed, they still exist in real life and memories of all affected by them.” This is a quote by Ellen Ingebritsen, a graduate from Amherst College and a current research assistant in the Martin Luther King Jr. wing of Stanford University in California. Suffering from harsh and inhumane segregation and inequalities that made them barely able to slip by, African American peoples have had rocky lives. The struggles were not only before the Civil Rights Movement, but the road to and from it as well. Most of the colored community has had a harsh journey from being considered property instead of people, to having near equal opportunities.…
The journey is a dynamic one, due to the lack of political and economic means, white elites controlled the structure of most of the twentieth century. He notes that politics and racial conflict outweighed the dynamics of education in the South, analyzing the motives of various organizations such as the Freemen’s Bureau, northern missionaries, and liberals. More significantly he outlines the long-term results of African Americans having to abide in an underfunded segregated system. Having minimal knowledge on the progressive era of African American history, The Education of Blacks in the South, 1860-1935 sheds light on the educational movement. By placing black schooling within a political, cultural, and economic context, he offers fresh insights into black commitment to education, with an outline of the fight during Reconstruction to afford an education, to the Hampton Model, to the peculiar significance of Tuskegee Institute, to black intellects, to the migration affects in the 1920s and 1930s.…
During the Howard University Commencement Ceremony Convocation. Dr. Oprah Winfrey gave a speech filled with Word of Encouragement. In hopes to motivate and uplift them as they prepare to conquer this new chapter in life. Toward the beginning of her speech, she posed the question that she felt as if all the graduate had wondering in their mind. “What am I going to do with all of this education?”…
From the beginning of recorded history, speeches have a tendency to be influential as they connect with their audience and illicit a specific thought or emotion. Continuing this custom, writer David Foster Wallace delivered his compelling commencement speech aptly titled, “Commencement Speech,” to an audience of students at Kenyon College in 2005. His purpose is to make the audience aware of our ‘default-setting’ of thinking. His ability to connect with his audience via word choice and the examples of everyday life he provides, proves his speech to be effective.…
A commencement speech is a speech given to graduating students at a university. The term commencement is used to illustrate a new beginning for the graduates as they embark on the journey that is the rest of their lives. J.K. Rowling and Suzan-Lori Parks are both famous women who have given similar commencement speeches to graduating classes. Though each discuss relatively different topics within their speeches, the overall message between both is to provide helpful insights to the graduating students on how to have a successful future. At a glance, Rowling and Parks’ speeches and personas appear quite similar.…
Graduating from college is the time to begin a new chapter. Commencement speeches are supposed to inspire and make graduating college students want to make a change. George Saunders gave a commencement speech at Syracuse University graduation in 2013. George Saunders did some things in his speech the traditional way but added a new twist on what is really important in life and in everyone’s career. Not only were the students, changed, but also every person that heard or read the speech felt inspired.…
Imagine being an African-American in the 1900’s, where the white citizens were treating their fellow black citizens with hate, and ignoring their problems because they thought they were superior to them. Envision yourself as a black student that can’t go to the same schools as the whites, share a water fountain, or even share a bathroom, and not even get the same rights/opportunities as the whites, this all because of the hate and ignorance from the white folks that believe they are superior. The worst part is that we’re all just the same with similar lifestyles and problems, but the only thing separating you is your skin color. Luckily for us in the 21st century we don’t have to live in segregation, but that doesn’t always mean there aren’t…
In 1796, after phrAses because the first president of America, George Washington addressed the American humans for the final time. It was called the Farewell Address. This speech became written within the 1796, a term described via the Yankee Revolution and inception of america. All through this era George Washington turned into a cherished and respected public figure among people. He becomes a role version and the concept of as the father of the us.…
Michelle Obama presents herself as a friendly character to the graduating class instead of as First Lady Michelle Obama. It seems to me she wants to make sure the attention is on the students and not on her because the day is supposed to be about all of them. She came to see them to make a speech not them coming to see her make a speech. So she talks to the class as an aproachable loving, caring type of person who is very proud of them. She recognizes not only the students but the parents and the people who have helped them be on the path they are now and gives thanks to nearly all of them and seems very sincere about it.…
In analyzing Ellen DeGeneres’ 2009 Tulane University commencement speech, in my opinion, was a combination of persuasive and informative. It starts off as informative and then towards the end it is almost like she is trying to persuade them that they will be okay out in the world after graduation. When Ellen begins her speech, she proceeds to tell the audience about her life before stardom, letting everyone know that she worked several different jobs that paid about minimum wage. Almost every college student can relate to that scenario, going to classes and working one or two jobs just to make ends meet while in college.…
Most college students can agree that they have one common goal; their goal is to graduate college with their desired degree. Reaching commencement is an honorable achievement. In most ceremonies, honorable people are chosen to give a motivational speech to the aspiring students. Bowie State University’s Commencement speech was given by the United States’ first lady, Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama has a very strong educational past and has earned numerous degrees of her own which makes her a seemly valid candidate to give this speech.…
Education is the greatest and weapon anyone can have; it’s the one thing nobody can disarm you of. When you’re educated about many things you gain success because you learn more about the world and people around you. In the mid 1800s most colleges and school’s barely accepted African-American students. Consequently, after the Civil War African-American education began to blossom so, black ministers and white philanthropist began to establish schools. There were over 100 of them that were opened, that we now call HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges or Universities).…
Before all he did before the marches the speeches the threats aimed at him he was a child. Martin Luther king had two siblings older sister Willie Christine King and a younger brother Alfred Daniel Williams King. King’s father regularly ripped him till he teenage years but it was not unheard of. King’s mother took him to sing in church choir since she was an accomplished organist and choir leader. When King was younger he befriended a white boy but they were torn apart when the boy’s father put him in a public school.…
I was very pleased to hear you speak at the California State University of Northridge, at the event of State of the City Address. You addressed the citizens of Los Angeles with valid information and phenomenal numbers of what you have inspired to our city. Hearing you speak was pleasant and assuring that I have such a great mayor who cares about his city so much and that my family and I have a well established city for us and our future. You used a great collaboration of ethic appeal that gave us a background of the things you have done, a great logical understandings of why Los Angeles has improved and why you are doing these things, and an emotional appeal to the hard road we Los Angeles citizens have had. Your voice projection was loud and…
The meaning of life is a question that many people have wondered about since human existence. The life we live should have meaning, but if it does what is that meaning. The meaning of life is most likely not a definition, but a form of life. The meaning of life can be seen as living life a certain way that fulfills the function of life. The overall goal of almost all humans is to be happy and experience love.…
