Traditions in Chinese culture have passed down from generation to generation. It is important to keep the tradition growing because it can keep the culture and religion of the Chinese stable. However, modern change should be included and become active around the world. In, Bound Feet and Western dress, Chang Yu-I is a modern chinese women who grows up living in America and goes through many struggles and tribulations of finding who she is. She is expected to follow the traditions of the chinese culture, but wants to be modern and not do what “society” wants her to do. In this essay, I will explain the traditions in chinese culture, liberations of what Chang Yu-i acquired throughout her life and the struggles and challenges she had to face with her husband.

Hsu Chih-mo was not the ideal of a good husband. His self image was someone who was selfish, arrogant, stubborn and cold- hearted. He didn't care about his marriage or what a family meant to him. The only thing he cared about was his education and divorcing Chang Yu-i. At first, I always thought Hsu Chih-mo was someone ChangYu-i feared and hated the most. Throughout her life, even though he wasn't a good husband, he was the one that made her stronger. Chang Yu-i always felt bad for him and did everything he asked for. She respected and loved his parents very dearly. Even though she hated her husband, she was the best daughter in- law that anyone could have asked for. She was able to gain freedom and enslave herself from her husband. Her husband was the hardest obstacle she had to overcome, but with her confidence and strength, she became the woman she is today. I think Hsu Chih-mo coped with the transition by not letting his arrogance get in the way and accepting that Chang Yu-i was very
