3-in-1 Bounce, Stride and Ride
Introduction The 3-in-1 Bounce, Stride & Ride Elephant from Fisher Price is a “grow-with-me” mobile toy, designed for infants from ages nine to thirty-six months. This adorable and interactive toy is made from colorful plastic and has measurements of 22" x 13" x 17" (Fisher Price, 2014). At the head of the elephant there are cloth ears that move as the elephant moves, a rollerball that rattles when struck, and large light up buttons that play over thirty different songs, sounds and phrases. In order to activate these features, the toy requires two triple A batteries. The sensorimotor period lasts from when a child is born, till their second birthday and is when an infant begins to form their first schemas based on motor behavior. A schema is an organized way of making sense about an experience. Other cognitive achievements gained within the first eight to twelve months of infancy is object permanence, as well as the ability shift actions from being accidental to intentional. Object permanence is when a child can fully grasp the understanding that an object still exists even when it is not visible. As for intentional behavior, when sitting on the elephant a nine month old may start by pressing one of the buttons accidently, however later in their infancy the child will be able to predict that when pressing the button a sound will alarm. These accidental movements help infants further validate or accommodate their preexisting schemas. In terms of motor development, the toy offers several opportunities for the infant to advance their gross and fine motor skills. By the age of nine months old, a child is physically able to sit up alone, pull itself to standing position and has recently gained the ability to cruise. With the many features this Fisher Price toy has to offer, the child has plenty opportunities to advance their motor skills. Between nine and twelve months old infants gain the ability to do the pincer grasp and can reinforce this skill through using the toys interactive features. The 3-in-1 Bounce, Stride & Ride Elephant is also deemed appropriate for its suggested age range for cognitive development. The toy offers opportunities for infants to build schemas and mental representations through their motor behavior. Between the ages eight to twelve months old, infants learn to gain control over their body and their actions go from accidental to being intentional. These intentional movements can be reinforced through using the buttons to get an expected sounded response. Lastly, a child’s language development skills are appropriately matched to the age range suggested for this toy. Many of the features available within the toy are not capable of being used by a nine month old, however, they do offer an exceptional amount of exposure to further
