Borges: A Narrative Analysis

A story is “an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment” according to Google. Stories are made to entertain the readers or watchers or audience. That is the main objective of an author, to entertain the common folk. In a short story all of the suspense is very short, and is up front. In a novel, the author can grab the readers by the throat and hold on for a very long while. If the author doesn’t keep the readers hooked, then the author has failed. “I recognized the voice that had answered in German” (Borges, 775). This is a very catching quote. Just to know that someone spoke German is very neat and interesting. Borges did a fantastic job in appealing to the senses. The “c” and “g” sounds are appealing to the …show more content…
In the plot, there is an exposition that creates the idea of the main characters of the story. It shows how the characters are related to one another. During the exposition, the main character is given a task (whether it be seen or unseen by the audience) and the risk that he or she takes to fulfill that task. The second part in the plot is the rising action. It is the event or series of events that pretty much introduce the main bad – guy that does things to take action. Rising action includes the bundle of events that happen right up until the climax. Also during the rising action of the plot, the main character shows how they defeat their problems or issues. The third part of the plot is the climax. The climax is the turning point of the story. The main character does something to either help or devastate him or her; this action also lays a road for the outcome of the story. The climax of “The Garden of Forking Paths” is when Dr. Albert gets shot. Richard Madden finally appears in the garden, and we know something big is about to go down. In a move that catches us completely by surprise, Yu Tsun uses his only bullet to shoot not Richard Madden, but Dr. Albert. The next part of the plot is the falling action. During this, the climax is coming to a halt and the story is coming to a close. This is a time when the good guy comes out a champion and the bad guy falls (metaphorically speaking). That’s in a happy ending la-la land story. In a tragedy, the bad guy usually wins. The next part of the plot is the resolution. During the resolution, the conflict is starting to fall into peace and the world or city or setting of the story is coming back together in harmony. The conflict

The narrative of Benito Cereno can be defined in three parts: the first part is told from a third person limited point of view, the second part is Cereno’s deposition to the court, and the third section is a brief conclusion of the narrative. In the first part, the narrator is placed outside the story and our knowledge is confined to what Captain Delano knows. The third person limited point of view is a common approach in mystery narratives and it keeps the readers in the dark as to what exactly has happened and is happening. The narrator’s perspective told in free indirect style, blurs with Delano’s perspective, allowing us to identify and differentiate the two. And again, the narrative blurring emphasizes and dramatizes the greyness and ambiguity…

Who are you? This simplistic question can conjure a variety of answers depending on the person responding. The most intriguing and successful replies arise from those who respond with the ideal criteria described by Ramsdell (2010) in “Storytelling, Narration, and the ‘Who I Am’ Story”. Based on Ramsdell’s criteria for the “Who I Am” story, it is evident that writers employ similar aspects into their writing, as seen in Sedaris’ (2000) “ Me Talk Pretty One Day”, and in my personal literacy narrative, “The Weight of Clinkscale: A Learning Experience”.…

The setting, time and place, can have a significant effect on the characters of a novel. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a novel that takes place in a small Colombian coastal town in 1950s. The story examines the murder of the protagonist Santiago Nasar, and the events leading up to it. Colombian culture has a heavy impact on the behaviours, character traits as well as the values of the characters in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. If the text had been written at the present time and if the setting had been a modern city in another place, the murder would not have occurred, and actions of certain characters of the novel would not make sense for certain reasons.…
