Bordetella Pertussis Just like the flu, pertussis is one of the many communicable disease that has recently broke out, causing numerous amounts of deaths and infections of the American people. “ Annually, more than 50 million cases of pertussis, including 600,000 deaths are reported worldwide”(Center for Biotechnology, Anna University). Pertussis is very contagious, the bacterial disease is also known as “whooping cough”. Whooping Cough is a upper respiratory infection caused by bacteria, Bordetella pertussis or Bordetella parapertussis. Whooping cough is transferred when an infected sneezes or coughs spread from person to person. This disease is most common in children and babies.

It has a “thin murein layer surrounded by an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharide and phospholipids, and they do produce a capsule. This rod-shaped bacterium is non-motile, non-spore forming, and about 0.5-1.0 μm in length”(Microbewikki). The bacterium has respiratory metabolism, but never performs fermentation. They are strict aerobes and uses cellular respiration. In other words, “an organism that requires oxygen to grow”(Google).Whooping Cough is fastidious, they will only grow when specific nutrients included in its diet.
