She even cuts off her medication in order to prove to her doctor that she can be capable and independent, and ready to become a well-loved celebrity. As a result, she decides to use the money she wins to pay for her own TV show, named “Welcome to Me”. The show solely revolves around Alice’s life. More accurately, it is a platform for her to belittle the people who had hurt her in the past, including her old doctor and a friend who used her makeup. The workers producing the show are all agitated by her absurd ideas and proposals such as neutering her dog right in front of her audiences. It does bring her money and fame; nevertheless, she is too deeply fascinated by these materials and herself becoming successful that she is losing her families, friends, and lovers. In the end, she finally realizes the pain she has caused in the people who care about her and decide to retake her medications. The movie has indeed revealed the deep impact of people with mental illness on their surroundings. Neither of them could truly understand each other’s behaviors and look into their minds. Alice tends to misunderstand them and sometimes even accidentally hurt them. It reminds me of The Beautiful Mind we watched in class, where John Nash’s wife Alicia has to force herself to become such a strong woman to support her husband. Yet, she is lucky that John Nash deeply cares for her. On the other hand, in the case of Alice, it is very different.
