There is no reported history of trauma. Ms. A. has a history of using illicit substances, but has reportedly been abstinent for over 5 years. Ms. A. brought a lab report from her doctor with her that supports this. Her alcohol use is described as occasional, and does not appear to be a clinical concern. The recent blood tests conducted by her primary care physician indicate that her health is good, and thyroid function in normal, ruling out over active thyroid as a cause of her symptoms. Based on the initial clinical impression, it is likely that Ms. A. suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder GAD). This paper will explore pharmacological treatment approaches for GAD. It will discuss anticipated side effects of the pharmacological treatment and will consider how drug side effects will be managed. Exploration of how the treatment approach will alter brain chemistry and influence behavior will be explored, as well. The impact of over-the-counter (OTC) and illicit drugs on prescribed pharmacological treatment will be examined, along with ethical, socio-cultural, legal and individual
