Books with Ice Cream is expected to serve three hundred students at a total cost of $82,000. This value is derived from similar bookmobile programs such MCNPL’s Words on Wheels program. Based on the description of the bookmobile program, Books with Ice Cream should cost less. Unlike a traditional bookmobile program, students do not enter the bookmobile which decreases the space needed inside. The extra space will allow us to purchase a smaller vehicle at a lower price. In the end, we should see that Books with Ice Cream will cost about $270 per student. I expect that children served by this program will not lose their reading skills over the summer. Fixing the issue of summer learning loss is a small, but key, issue. Once we overcome this issue, we must tackle the other parts of the chain: preschool, college enrollment and college graduation. We can use the three concepts found in the problem section to discover the solution. Any initiative must keep the cost low, follow the partnerships prefer but not required axiom and be proven effective. In the case of preschool, we can create variations of all our three initiatives. Tablets can be lend to mothers with educational games so that the child can start learning the alphabet and the numbers. The tablet can also be equipped with audio books that will ensure they hear plenty of high level words. Text messages can also be sent to the mother with tasks to improve their child’s academics. All these initiatives will be low cost, follow the partnerships prefer but not required axiom and, hopefully, be proven effective. In the case of increasing college enrollment, I will rely on the model employed by Study Orange. Study Orange uses texting to guide students step by step through the college application process. The students in the program have been accepted at countless schools including John Hopkins, USC and Pomona. The program has the benefit of being cost effective (approximately $30 per student), self reliant and effective. In order to increase the college graduation rate, we can once again rely on the programs we have used so far. A text messaging program is particularly relevant since many students miss important deadlines. Text messages can help communicate with the student to ensure they stay on track. As mentioned previously, text messages are an inexpensive method that can be quite
