The novel The Book Thief, which is written by Markus Zusak, tells an enticing tale as we follow a story written in the perspective of death himself. The title of the book however, The Book Thief, refers to the main character Liesel Meminger as she steals books due to her love for reading. The book addresses the life of Liesel Meminger as she struggles through her childhood between the years of 1939 and 1943 when World War II was taking place. The author uses many distinct themes and strong characters to build the plot of the story. The Book Thief also presents itself with many …show more content…
Liesel's younger brother, Werner, dies on the train ride to Molching. This is the first time Death has an encounter with Liesel. She is sent to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann who will become her foster parents. Liesel having been deeply upset from the loss of her brother and mother, seeks confidence in Hans who is a nice man that helps her learn the alphabet and how to read. Liesel slowly develops an overwhelming love for reading and writing. Liesel becomes friends with a boy, Rudy Steiner, who has a crush on her. At a book burning, Liesel is seen stealing a book by the mayor's wife Ilsa Hermann. Liesel later begins delivering washing for Rosa one of her customers being Ilsa. When Liesel is delivering the washing, Ilsa begins allowing Liesel to read in her library. Later Ilsa says that she cannot afford the washing any more so Liesel who is upset begins breaking into her study and stealing books. A Jewish man named Max Vandenberg then comes to stay at the Hubermanns. Liesel and Max become very close. While Max is staying there he writes Liesel a book called “The Word Shaker,” which tells the tale of their friendship. When Hans raises suspicion by giving an old man some bread, Max decides it is time to leave before he gets the Hubermanns in trouble. Right after Max leaves, Hans and Rudy’s dad get sent into the war. Liesel and Rudy see a fighter pilot, who has crashed his plane, die. Thus, Death sees Liesel for the second time when he comes to collect the pilot’s soul. Liesel sees Max on the street in a group of Jews walking towards a concentration camp which leads to her telling Rudy about her hiding Max. Liesel became upset so Ilsa gives Liesel a blank notebook. Liesel decides to write a story of her own. In 1943 the whole of Himmel Street is bombed. Everyone in the neighborhood dies in their sleep except for Liesel who was writing her book in the basement.
