Imagery is defined as visually descriptive or figurative language in literary work. Freeman uses imagery to help the reader get into the characters feelings. Imagery helps the reader to feel as if they had been through the same situation and were right there amongst the characters. An example from the book would be, “Cold wind roared in his ears. He tramped through low, woody brush, his footsteps, crackling, on the litter of fallen limbs and dried pinecones, until he reached a gap in the forest where he could dig” (63) Freeman uses descriptive words to help the reader imagine what the situation would be like. Parallelism is the use of similar patterns of words (or grammatical forms) to express similar or related ideas or ideas of equal importance. Freeman used parallelism to make a link between two completely different events and tie them together in some way. He tied them together so the reader would realize that even though they are not going through the same situation they are still experiencing the same feeling. So Freeman is showing that everyone goes through a period of helplessness and need for happiness and answers, but they aren’t the only ones that are in need, other people are hurting around them also.
